William Howard Taft was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1857. He graduated from Yale College (now Yale University) in 1878, and then from Cincinnati Law School in 1880. In 1887, he was appointed to the Ohio Supreme Court. In 1890, he was appointed Solicitor General of the United States, and then to a seat on the US Court of Appeals (Sixth Circuit) in 1891. In 1900, President William McKinley appointed Taft the first civilian Governor-General of the Philippines. In 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt appointed Taft Secretary of War, expecting Taft to follow him in the Presidency. In 1908, Taft was elected the 27th President of the United States. After one term, Roosevelt returned to challenge Taft for the Presidency. Woodrow Wilson won the election, and Taft won the ignominy of being the only sitting President to come in third in his bid for re-election. After leaving the White House in 1913, Taft became a law professor at Yale Law School, and was also elected president of the American Bar Association. He co-chaired the National War Labor Board in 1917 and 1918. In 1921, President Warren Harding fulfilled Taft's lifelong dream of an appointment to the Supreme Court, when he named Taft the 10th Chief Justice (making Taft the only person to serve on the Court and as President). At one point during his tenure on the Court, Taft remarked "Sometimes I do not remember that I was ever President." Taft retired from the Court in 1930, a month before his death. In 1914, between his service in the Executive and the Judicial branches of the US government, Taft gave this lecture as part of the Page Lecture Series before the Senior Class of Yale University's Sheffield Scientific School. As Taft says in his introduction, "a discussion of the ethics and ideals of that profession would come within the purpose of the Page foundation," which was to promote "the ethical side of business life, including the morals and ethics of public service." Herein, Taft discusses the history of the legal profession, "which shows that a paid advocacy is the only practical system, and the rules of conduct to which lawyers must be held in order that such a system shall promote justice."

WAY too simple!!

I have never posted a negative review before but I'm so dumbfounded after reading all the 5 star reviews. I thought I should share my point of view to help others weigh the pros and cons to see if this book is really a good fit. I learned it certainly was NOT a good fit for us after reviewing this book in whole.

I bought this book because my son tested on the low end of average on a test, so not a serious problem, just in need of some focus and learning test taking skills. I spoke to my mother about this book as she worked for an excellent school system writing the actual reading tests given to kids, then for a publisher of text books. She stated that kids at this age need to learn both strong reading comprehension as well as good test taking skills... that the writers of these tests try to fool kids into wrong answers, in a way. They do this by making the answer options all similar to things mentioned in the paragraph in question, leaving the correct answer not clear to those that either didn't bother to fully read the relevant paragraph or to those that are truly having trouble retaining the facts as represented in the paragraph. However, this book (in my opinion) is full of questions so simple, little or no reading let alone comprehension seems to be necessary to find the correct answer. This might even actually teach kids that it is often ok to skip or skim the segment and that common sense can often answer questions correctly. This could be devastating if a parent is hoping to improve test taking skills and help teach a child to focus and retain important information they have read and once the child takes a real test, is lost in the weeds. On the other hand, this may be good for kids that have a major reading and vocab issue that needs attention.

Here are some examples of what I am talking about. These are questions in the book. If you can answer these on your own without reading a word of the paragraph on which the question is based... and you think your 3rd grader can, too, then you may want to keep looking for a tougher book.

In this story, the word SIMPLE means:
a. easy b. happy c. hidden d. loving (Hint: The answer is so easy, a 3rd grader can surely get it without comprehending anything.)

What do we use for money today?
a. gold b. shells c. bills and coins d. beans and beads (Hint: Welp, if a 3rd grade thinks you paid beans for this, the purchaser didn't pay too much.)

And much more just like this. In short, this book is probably a good book for someone that has a child really struggling. Those in need of a little help and focus, but on grade level, will probably need something with more umph and substance. This isn��t a lot of money to lose, but for folks excited to help work with their kids on this like I am, the delay caused by having to order another book is disappointing, so heads up. �

Excellent book for first grade.

Love this book for my first graders. It has a complete reading comprehension in all DOK skills. By the readings, they can develop other comprehension areas needed for the grade. They are short but very interesting reading, it has illustrations for them like little games. In overall is very attractive for them to have the needed attention that reading requires.

Great test prep!

Great test prep for my son. He needed practice taking "bubble" tests, especially following different directions, and this really helped. Reading comprehension, vocabulary, synonyms, antonyms, multiple meanings and study skills are just some of the areas covered. It showed me what areas we needed to work on and helped him to be more confident when he took his standardized test.

Mr. David Holdstock, BA, MS, a geographic information systems (GIS) professional and chief executive officer, co-established and incorporated Geographic Technologies Group, Inc. in 1997. Mr. Holdstock is a GIS practitioner and a leading expert in developing enterprise and sustainable GIS strategic implementation plans for towns, cities, and counties. Over the past 25 years, Mr. Holdstock has planned, designed, and coordinated the adoption and implementation of GIS technology for over 200 local government organizations. He has published many articles on GIS strategic planning for local government, including assessing the value of GIS; understanding the challenges, barriers, and pitfalls of GIS; and the implementation process for local government. These charts are well made and have very good illustrations and I'm glad that I have this one.
The endocrine system is so important, producing all those hormones and all that they do.
A very good learning tool and knowing it's parts leads me to do some research of my own.
Helps me too for when I'm speaking with the Dr. to have a better understanding of what he is talking about.

This book features 366 essays penned from a woman's perspective. Sample topics include gratitude, harmony, self-nurturing, positive body image, the importance of scented linen closets, and many others. Each essay sports a pithy quote from (surprise!) the likes of Kahlil Gibran. Viewed uncritically, it's hard to argue with Simple Abundance's earnest admonitions to appreciate life, in all its messy imperfect excellence. And the fact that serenity and happiness are each in dreadfully short supply can excuse some of the treacly writing. But Breathnach sometimes lapses into what can only be described as her "Martha Stewart on Prozac" voice, and the results are aggravating to the extreme: "If you've been hesitant to strike up a reciprocal relationship with your guardian angel, don't be." Fans of guardian angels will greet these feel-good essays every morning with the rising sun, a cup of mint tea, and a bluebird chirping on the windowsill, and be happy. Skeptics will prefer their coffee very black.

Essential reading for anyone going through difficult times

This book really helped me through the first two years of having left my husband and the ensuing divorce. I'd read dozens of devotionals, but this one is different. It is not overtly of any one religion, so you can take her mentions of the Spirit to fit into your own faith journey. I grew so much through reading this. And I found keeping the gratitude journal especially healing. I cannot recommend it highly enough. I buy this book for my friends who are going through hard times. If you can only have one book for those hard times, this is it.

Wonderful book

In reading the reviews already posted, there is really nothing I can add to them, other than to say that I absolutely love this book. I got it a few weeks ago, and started it the next morning on the corresponding date, and have added it religiously to my morning ritual. I do smile at a few of the outdated musings ~ like "visit a record shop", "go to a video store and rent movies from the 30's and 40's", "tape affirmations on your tape recorder." Nostalgia. Altho' I'm sure there ARE some record shops and video stores around, and some folks still have tape recorders. And anything can be rented on Amazon, if it's not on NETFLIX. And I have a "tape recorder" on my iPhone. So we can still DO those things, just in a different and updated way. Anyhow, Sarah writes about so many things that go right to my heart. I am so glad I got this book. And I like it so well, I also ordered one for a friend of mine that I know "needs" it at this point in her life.

This book is a LIFE CHANGER! I consider it my personal Bible! I have been reading it for YEARS! Feeling depressed yesterday-- picked it up - and within a few sentences... I felt inspired. Since reading this book I have made drastic changes in my life. I own my own business... I moved to a small town, bought my dream house, and I am working on being a better person. I give this book to friends and family who need inspiration - who could use help in their daily lives. This book gives you tools that can get out of bed in the morning and make you want to live a better life. Go forth and read!

Dissapointing and inconvenient to use.

Difficult and inconvenient to use. You have to download a third party app to view it, it was hard finding a good one for Android. Viewing it on Adobe's Digital Edition's software for PCs is equally inconvenient. Would be better if it was printed out.

The QR codes for Prof Messers videos feels gimmicky. Ties in okay in chapters.

The thing I was most disappointed with was how things are explained on the pages. It doesn't go in enough depth for concepts that would be new to a recently A+ certified tech. Goes right over my head. It's also very dry, I liked Mike Meyer's book better.

It would have been nice in the exam objectives were in order instead of scattered. This makes going back and forth between Messer's videos and this book feel disorienting.

It will probably do the job, but it's just not a good fit for me.

Great Mechanical Engineering guide!

What a book! It is so easy to read and understand. I wish this book was around when I was going for my BSME. It is a great reference book that all designers should have on their shelves.

Inventor's Smorgasbord

I am a farmer who enjoys making machinery. I design my contraptions on paper, then using a CAD program to refine the designs. Having no training in engineering I am frequently using references such as "Machinery's Handbook" and "Moving The Earth" and "Mark's Standard handbook of Mechanical Engineering" and others.

I have to say, that Parmley's book is a treasure trove of information, with heaps of unusual ideas for common compnents such as O-rings, rubber balls, pipe connections, washers and many others, plus hard information about more complex components such as gearboxes, cams, governors etc etc.

This is a big book, with many pages (numbering within each section only), lovely clear diagrams, and enough but not too many tables, formulae and specifications. It can be browsed cover to cover, (as I am doing for the 2nd or 3rd time), open a page at random and be fascinated, or look up specific topics in the excellent index.

I have read the other reviews on this book, and clearly it is a valuable rescource to professionals. I can tell you that it is also a fantastic mine of information to the interested amateur.

Wealth of information but poor quality book.

The Illustrated Sourcebook of Mechanical Components has a great amount of information that is nearly invaluble for practicing engineers. It is a staple of my library and I turn to it first when I need ideas on a new design. However, the quality of the book construction itself is extremely poor. The pages are not sewn in signatures, but are instead glue-backed single sheets as you would see in a perfect bound paperback. Unlike a paperback though, the spine is hollow, so there is no support for the text block. Intended as a reference book, the construction is more suited to a mass-market romance novel, and will not stand up to the rigors of the intended usage. Even with careful use, I've had pages fall out and the text block separate in the middle. For $130, McGraw-Hill should be ashamed. I will not be buying any reference book from them without being able to see it in person first.
