An Outstanding "Big Picture" Reference - Starting Out? Start Here

I'm sure there may be some cave dweller somewhere who is not familiar with the concept behind the "For Dummies" series but the rest of us generally recognize them as outstanding, authoritative resources for hundreds of topics. I have read and reviewed many of these books and, without exception, have found everyone of them to be exactly what they claim to be.
"Coding For Dummies" is one of the best ones I've read yet. If you are interested in learning how to code for the web, but don't have much experience or knowledge, get this book first! It is an outstanding overview of all the latest information on creating content for the web experience.
The book is clearly designed for those who know all the words but don't necessarily understand them. If you have worked in HTML in the past but need a refresher course on the latest coding languages, it is here. This modestly sized volume (only about 260 pages) covers everything you need to know to get up to speed with HTML 5, CSS, Javascript, Python and Ruby. These days, clients and employers (and users, whether they know it or not) are interested in responsive design and app creation, both are here with sections on Bootstrap and app creation. These days you want to make sure you are designing for the phone or tablet, that is all here.
The book is lavishly illustrated (in color!) and demos are clear and easy to follow. There is also an outstanding section of resources and great advice on how to move forward in coding. I have done some computer coding and have used many resources to get better at it, but this was the best book I have used yet for giving me a big picture sense of the whole business.
This is not a "college course in a book." No section is in depth enough to make you an expert on the subject, although for beginners the HTML and the CSS sections are very thorough, but there is enough here to get you pointed in the right direction.

A Good Survey Book of Web Programming Languages

A great survey book for the person who wants to become acquainted with web-based computer programming, and doesn’t know where to begin. A better title for the book might be “Web-based Computer Programming for Dummies” as the books deals almost exclusively with the web-based computer languages: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Ruby, and Python. It omits much talk about some of the more tradition languages such as C++, Java, SQL, etc.
The author assumes that the reader knows nothing and starts at the beginning with the most rudimentary topics as “what is computer coding”, and the difference between high-level and low-level languages.
The book isn’t a deep dive into any of the fore mentioned languages; rather, it ties them all together at a high level so that the reader understands how they interact and the responsibilities and features of each language.
Not to say that this book is void of actually programming. It helps the reader build his/her first web-based application. It also introduces the reader to conditional logic and inspecting the code via a browser tool.
The goal of this book is to give the reader enough understanding that he/she can then dive into more in-depth tutorials on each one of the languages individually. The author list ten great free sites devoted to tutoring in computer programming. This is not a book that will make a great reference for years to come. And the reader will quickly outgrow this book with the knowledge he/she learns when finished. Nevertheless, it is an indispensable guide with basic, essential understandings that often get overlooked by more in-depth programming books.

A great resource for novice coders

I'm reasonably tech-savvy, but never coded outside of one (long since forgotten) class of C++ in high school. All the talk of late about "data scraping," "writing scripts," etc. got me interested in learning about coding, so I've been working through the book. It delivered. As all "For Dummies" books should, it uses plain language and was easy to read. Also, it tied into the Codecademy site nicely. Recommend it.
