About the Author

DAVID AUNE is Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at the University of Notre Dame. He holds an M.A. from Wheaton Graduate School of Theology, an M.A. from the University of Minnesota, and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Among his publications are The New Testament in its Literary Environment and Greco-Roman Literature and the New Testament (editor).

The standard for professional scholars.

I certainly agree with points made by one reviewer who described these volumes as encyclopaedic "database for specialists", but that is inconsistant with his being doubtful of the usefulness of some sections and their level of detail. He may never had to write an exegesis paper for a graduate level course on a biblical subject. Of course, I am giving away my point of view. That said, I would NEVER recommend this book, or any one of its volumes to the casual reader who wanted to know something about Revelation. I would not even recommend the Word series for pastors. For that, there are lots of really good books, such as Ben Witherington's social commmentary or Elizabeth Schussler Fiorenza's feminist leaning commentary, or best of all, Bruce Metzger's "Breaking the Code".

The Word series is for professors who teach in seminaries, and who deal with deep textual and translational problems. This is especially true of Aune's three volumes.That is as long as Nolland's 3 volumes on the Gospel of Luke, which is longer book in the Bible. Part of this may be due to the fact that Revelation may be the most poorly written book in the Greek New Testament. Even as late as Erasmus' 1516 edition of the Greek NT, we did not have good sources for the whole book. Erasmus filled in the gaps by back translating parts from St. Jerome's Latin translation. (These missing Greek pieces have since been found. Jerome did NOT make those parts up.)

I have used several different works in the Word commentary series, alway with some other commentary open at the same time. Almost invariably, the Word contribution is more even handed, more thorough, and more accurate in avoiding far fetched theories about the text. Aune, however, does stray from this standard in a big way with his theory, ably described in Mr. Garrow's review. I will also agree with Mr. Garrow's review of the first volume, and his source, Dr. Richard Bauckham, that unlike the Gospel of John, for example, Revelation is probably the result of a single hand, maybe not all in one sitting, but that would help to explain the atrocious Greek.

Reading Word commentaries can be a bit tedious, but if you are looking for information on an especially detailed matter in the text, this is the place to come. I think library search software may someday replace the Word series, but that time has not yet come.

Aune has hit a home run with his commentary on Revelation 6-16 in the Word Biblical Commentary series. Exhaustive in treatment of words, excellent in comparison of their use within Revelation, and extensive in offering alternate meanings with their sources, this book is a must for anyone seeking to update their collection of reference books on this last and controversial book of the New Testament.

Although Jean chose to collaborate with the Germans and formed an uneasy friendship with Minden, Louise despised the officer and detested her husband's weakness. Then handsome Roger Savage, an American spy posing as Louise's cousin, arrived, intent on destroying the supply of lethal nerve gas being manufactured by the Germans in the nearby village. His operation succeeds, but in the process, he murders a high-ranking German general. The Germans punish the entire village for Savage's attack, and the form of retribution they choose is particularly merciless and horrifying. Louise, torn between loyalty to her husband and her growing love for Savage, uses the only weapon she can think of to stop the Germans from destroying her home, her family, and her village. The suspense is palpable, the action nerve-tingling, and the story gripping and original. Despite a sentimental conclusion, this is a white-knuckled, hair-raising page-turner of a thriller. About the Author
Evelyn Anthony began her writing career after meeting her husband in 1949. Primarily self-taught, she was educated at home during the War--first writing short stories for magazines. She went on to achieve success with her historical romances and espionage and thriller stories. Her novels have been selected for the American Literary Guild and The Tamarind Seed was made into a film starring Omar Sharif and Julie Andrews.

good story but not factual

In May 1944, a small French village is getting along peacefully with their Nazi occupiers until an OSS agent parachutes in with an important mission, one that could turn the tide of war. Many of the villagers are collaborators with the Nazis, including the count at the chateau. His wife, Louise, an American, has lost all respect for him because of his weak stance with the Nazis. A German officer is killed in mysterious circumstances and all hell breaks loose, with fearful retributions to the village. In the chateau lives a Nazi officer who is crazy with desire for Louise. All these circumstances create a great story and a suspenseful one. My problem with it is that Ms. Anthony should have had a WWII historian read the book before publication because of wincing factual errors. Or she should have had a better editor. Allan Dulles, the head of OSS in Bern did not know for certain that there were death camps in the Reich until the late fall of 1944. Of course most people knew about the concentration camps, but not extermination camps. Dulles had heard rumors of the death camps from escaping Polish officers, but nothing was confirmed until much later. French villagers in May 1944 certainly would not have known this. Ms. Anthony is a very talented writer and I have enjoyed several of her books, especially The Tamarind Seed. I just wish she had done more research for this one.

This is a good read of the WW II era, about the choices people make during war time and their consequences....However, this book was originally published in 1973 under the title"Stanger at the Gates".

A wonderful novel

This is an outstanding novel. It is not the novel that Germans would like to read but for French people they should hopefully put it into the school libraries. A great deal has been written about the German occupation of France and how the Germans now complain that they were treated very badly after the War by French people who did not give thanks for the material help which individual Germans had given to the French people . Frau Minden talks of a debt as if the Germans were entitled to payment for providing food.. The French people showed great courage under German occupation .

There are so many times when you don't have very much time to sit down for a long read or long drawn out boring lessons. This book gets right to the point. I very much like this book. It is a wonderful and easy read.

Pretty good

There is a lot of garbage out there and it is so hard to sift through the good and the bad. It is almost impossible to find anything that does not label itself "wicca". Which is something Traditionalists will argue to death is not a solitary religion. (to be Wiccan you MUST be in a coven.) This book gives some good instructions on how to expand your abilities without labeling it Wicca" He also has some good advice on finding a teacher. I reccomend this book for some good basics. Definitely a good starting point.

very good introductory (and review) course

There are many books on widely varying paths. This book is an excellent source book for someone contemplating how or where to start. There are no "hidden agendas" here. The caveats are clear and sound. The integration of introspection into morality and internal work, as well as the importance of the mental work such as reading other sources and keeping a journal, are well done. This book is also a good refresher of the basics for those who feel they are 'advanced'.

Speed and $ in your pocket... ! It's not impossible.

This book is what I expected from David Vizard, honest and properly researched information. It's focus is primarily on $ and not the HOW and WHY that David normally goes into. If all you want to know is what you need to go fast, and you don't want to spend lots of cash and you DO have lots of time to spend building a motor - then this is THE book for you. If you have read DV's other books, then this is still worth buying because DV devulges how to get the best bang for the buck. You will find that this book summarizes a lot of what is mentioned in his other books - with the exception of the chapter on exhaust, there is some new stuff there. So if your hooked on DV like I am - go get it!! It's worth it! :)
There are also 10 'recipes' in the back of the book - from 350hp to over 600hp. None costing over $3000.
I also HIGHLY recommend DV's other books... very informative reading.

Fabulous overview on building a budget engine

I needed to build a stong motor on the cheap, and this was the guide I was looking for. He tells you all the little tricks, and tips that you need to know to build a strong competent motor without spending too much money. I highly recommend it.

Just what the title says!

Vizard delivers exactly what the title is all about. He helps you balance power & longevity against the pocketbook. He also substantiates his claims with his own companies dyno or flow data. Rebuilds range from a minimum of $600@300hp to a maximum of $3000@550hp. Add some nitrous (he talks about this too) and you have a 800hp engine for under $3500 bucks! Be warned, he is blunt and opinionated but backs up his claims.

The roots of religion stretch as far back as half a million years, when our ancestors developed the motor control to engage in social rituals--that is, to sing and dance together. Then, about 70,000 years ago, a global ecological crisis drove humanity to the edge of extinction. It forced the survivors to create new strategies for survival, and religious rituals were foremost among them. Fundamentally, Rossano writes, religion is a way for humans to relate to each other and the world around them--and, in the grim struggles of prehistory, it offered significant survival and reproductive advantages. It emerged as our ancestors' first health care system, and a critical part of that health care system was social support. Religious groups tended to be far more cohesive, which gave them a competitive advantage over non-religious groups, and enabled them to conquer the globe.

Rather than focusing on one aspect of religion, as many theorists do, Rossano offers an all-encompassing approach that is rich with surprises, insights, and provocative conclusions.

The existence of God has been part of human discussion for centuries. Believers point to evidence of design and rationality as convincing proofs of divine presence. Rossano, head of the psychology department at Southeastern Louisiana University, looks instead to notions borrowed from anthropology and sociology to construct a purely nonreligious view of the evolution of religion. Favoring science over sentiment, he takes great comfort in the idea that �pieces of our evolutionary puzzle are now falling into place.� He suggests that religion, which he describes as an �evolutionary adaptation,� arises from intergroup competition and is the result of the inevitable struggles that occur when groups compete for the same prizes (in this case, adherents to their message). To true believers, this is a grim assessment of the religious notions that underlie their lives. Casual readers will find this book tough going and, in some instances, overly technical. But with patience, most will find food for thought.

Best Book on This Subject I have Read

Probably the best and most informative book I have ever read concerning this subject. I particularly liked the way he progressed from the beginnings of rituals, how they began, how these conclusions were arrived at by comparing traditional hunter gathers and other primates types of rituals, through shamanism and finally arriving at supernatural agents.

One Quibble. Mr. Rossano, like many modern authors, have begun to use she in place of he when describing a group or a representative of a group. Traditional English language uses the word he for this sort of description. Using she is, in my mind, a form of political correctness. This always starts me wondering if any of the authors who write this way allow political correctness to alter some of there findings.

Good; not the last word of course.

I read this book from my local library, but if you are interested in the ancestral roots of religion it might be a good purchase. It doesn’t say much about the creation more modern religions as we know them (Hinduism, Buddhism Judaism, Christianity, Islam). What this book does best is suggest an early starting point for religion, about 70,000 year ago in Africa, and a point at which it flourishes: 30,000 years ago in Europe during the Upper Paleolithic. The author contends that shamanistic ritual is one of the early elements of religion, and that religion is essentially about relationships and a cohesive group morality and behavior. The book cannot account for or describe everything; it is best treated as one plausible theory, and not the definitive last word on religion. Certainly much more needs to be said about that, but overall as possible or even plausible account of how religion may have begun, it sheds some useful light.

A good book with a few flaws

I think the author is basically correct in his major points. At times though, unless I am interpreting some of his statements incorrectly, there may be some logical flaws. For example, at one point says that ritual behavior was the very mechanism by which we acquired our uniquely human capacity for symbolic thought; he points to ritual that exists in the animal kingdom, which has no symbolic content, but I saw no explanation why this would trigger symbolic capacity for humans. Separately, I personally prefer books that rely less on very recent research, especially when only a single study is involved, since it often takes a while for flawed research studies to be "de-bunked."

An elegantly written recollection by an incredible woman.

This autobiography offers amazing insights not only into the thoughts and feelings of a truly delightful and perceptive woman but also an extrodinarily intimate record of the extreme struggle to survive and retain a sense of balance and optimism during the period of outrageous Nazi dominance across much of Europe.

Written in a delightfully graceful and elegant style that is almost totally absent today, Rita Levi-Montalcini's autobiograpghy takes one through the challenges of growing up in Torino during the period when women were not expected to want anything beyond getting married, raising a family and being the support system for their husbands. Add being a Jew in a primarily non-Jewish environment and one begins to appreciate the enormous hill Ms Levi-Montalcini climbed from her nursery in a warm and supporting household in 1908 to the wonder of being feted by both Swedish and scientific royalty in Stockholm in 1986. Never anything but disarmingly open and humble, the author shares all of her thoughts, feelings, desires, hopes and fears as she overcomes huge challenges and relentlessly pursues Mother Nature, finally getting her to relinquish a few fundamental secrets regarding our central nerve system.

Though a non-biologist, non-doctor, non-physiologist, I was nonetheless able to enjoy (though for sure not comprehend) the scientific details of her accomplishment. Fear not, her writting is sufficiently clear that even the most non-medical among us can fabricate a good mental image of her ground breaking yet simple research in sufficient detail to at least appreciate and enjoy, if not understand, her struggle and ultimate success in identifying the human Nerve Growth Factor.

I'd love to get a copy to read this!

Ordered and paid $81.25 for a used copy from AmazonUK in Dec2012 after reading Dr Levi-Montalcini's obituary; she was 101.
I never received it. Let the seller know, they refunded all but $17.

Chalk that up to live and learn- probably pinched on the sending end, given her death and people wanting to read about her causing what few existing books available to skyrocket in prices like you see here.

The publisher needs to go to a second printing to make this book widely available as it is a story which deserves a large audience!
I finally got a used copy to read, at a bargain price of around $80.
You are right- the price offends, and this brilliant woman's thoughts, insights and her story needs to be available to millions.
That Rita-Levi-Montalcini's story happened DURING World War II, and she was Jewish, and she explains what she and family and friends endured during this time is equally enlightening as a primary history source. Gutwrenching to me, she describes being in Florence as the Nazis bombed the ancient bridges...
Get it, read it is all I can say. The scientific story is impressive as well of course. Some ethical intelligent publisher somewhere should republish this! Maybe Jeff Bezos would be willing to underwrite the publishing?

Save Money and Buy The Old Edition

The differences between this edition and the 7th edition are grossly overstated. The principles and concepts remain the same with minor changes apparent. Indeed, the author does not provide any examples of 'new and improved' changes. Readers will pay a overwhelming premium for nothing more than a slicker format and "co-author" englossed beneath the title.

Roger Chickering is Professor of History in the Center for German and European Studies, Georgetown University. He is an established scholar of modern Germany and is the author of Das Deutsche Reich und der Erste Weltkrieg (2002); Kar Lamprecht: A German Academic Life, 1856-1915 (1993); We Men Who Feel Most German: A Cultural Study of the Pan-German League, 1886-1914 (1984); and Imperial Germany and a World Without War: The Peace Movement and German Society 1892-1914 (1975).

Social and economic history--not military history

Admittedly, I purchased this book not realizing that it doesn't focus much on military matters, but on economic and social elements of the German home front during WWI. Military developments are covered only broadly. And there is no dramatic narrative here: it reads more like a textbook, containing charts, graphs and statistics showing different characteristics of Imperial German society during WWI.

But Chickering's book is not without value to the reader whose primary interest is military history. There are decent maps that give overviews of the major operations of the war, and there is a very useful section in the back under "Military Affairs" in "suggestions for further reading."

Also, congrats to the author for sidestepping the issue of what he calls

'Originally published more than 20 years ago, this revised third edition of Prof. Chickering’s social, economic, and political history of Germany in 1914-1918, appears in time for the centenary of the World War. He opens with a brief look at German government and society on the eve of the war. There follow three chapters that focus on the conduct of the war and the military and societal problems it engendered, such as manpower shortages, the problem of feeding soldiers and civilians, and the need for industrial, financial, and social mobilization. Next comes a chapter on the effects of the war on the German people, including the effects on the economy, social class and mobility, gender roles, generational conflict, and religion; in the battle and home fronts. Chickering makes note of the many problems that are obvious in retrospect, but were not anticipated at the time, such as the effects of mobilization on education or health care, as large number of male teachers and physicians were called up for active duty. He follows this with a look at how the initial broad political and social support for the war began to deteriorate, and follows that with a discussion of Germany’s efforts to achieve peace, first by the desperate gamble of the Kaiserschlacht and then through diplomacy, before finally agreeing to a highly unfavorable Armistice. Chickering’s final chapter looks at the consequences of the war, including the rise of the “Stab in the Back” myth. Throughout the work Chickering carefully points out the interrelationship between events at the front and developments at home, a matter often neglected in general histories of wars, and thus making his book of particular value to anyone trying to understand how nations make war.'

Imperial Germany and the Great War

I bought this book on the strength of a review in History Today, in order to prepare a unit of work for a course I hadn't taught for 20 years. The book has got three advantages: it gives a very useful bibliographical appendix (good for those who are 20 years behind); it is full of interesting information (the bits about agriculture, the Hamsterfahrten and the 1915 Schweinmord stick in the mind); and - coming from the previous point, it is just a bloody good read. This is great, comprehensive, open-minded history. Three months ago I had grave doubts about embarking on German history again; now I'm all for it.
