Ideal for Intermediate Language Learners
By RoadLover
I teach at a language school in Fort Lauderdale. Dozxens of students each month ask me, "How can I improve my English?" I tell them, "Get a dictionary with synonyms and opposites." The Webster S and A is the best I've found -- and portable, too.
It is vital for language learners to have something interesting to pull them forward. We tend to learn by what we are interested in and in what the opposite is. "That movie was ________" (interesting, great, fantastic...not boring, not slow, not hard to understand.) We tend to think in similars and opposites, so why not use a book that is designed to give you shades of meaning as well as the opposites? I highly recommend this book and I encourage students to pick it up. What is very good in this book? There is an example sentence to show the meaning, such as:
weak, feeble frail weak is broad, like a weak muscle, a week excuse, foundation. feeble usually shows ineffectiveness or smoethign we should pity: a feeble old man, feeble joke. frail suggests an inherited weakness, that something is weak in the structure: her frail body, a frail conscience.
You see what a valuable tool this is? I urge you to recommend this book to your learners of English, even if they are native speakers.

"Master the Subtleties of Language"
By Stacey Cochran
The quote that makes, forms, shapes, fashions, fabricates, manufactures, forges my title comes from the back of the book:~)

"The Merriam-Webster Dictionary of Synonyms and Antonyms" is the hands down best reference book I've ever bought.

It groups synonyms together and then explains the subtle differences between them (e.g., "infer, deduce, conclude, judge, gather" are followed by definitions of each word explaining the subtle differences in their meanings -- and example of their usage in a sentence) If ever you spent five bucks on a writing reference book, this is the book to have.

My only critique is that very few nouns are ever given (most synonyms given in this book are either verbs or adjectives). And it would be helpful to see all the subtle differences between nouns like "automobile, car, sedan." I hope this helps.

Very good, but I recommend other 2 books that are better
By Bob Sue
This book is very nice, but may be not the best for your particular desire. If you want more detailed information and usage examples, I recommend the M-W's Dictionary of Synonyms, if you would like a convenient guide of using words, I would say M-W's Pocket Guide of Synonyms is better for you!

An analysis of the methods of Solomonic magic from the 7th to the 19th century as found in the Hygromanteia and Key of Solomon. This volume is about the methods of magic used in 7th century Egyptian Alexandria and how they have been passed via the Greek grimoires of Byzantium (the Hygromanteia), to the manuscripts of the Latin Clavicula Salomonis and its English incarnation as the Key of Solomon. Jewish techniques like the use of pentacles, oil and water skrying were added along the way, but Solomonic magic (despite its name) remained basically a classical Greek form of magic. Amazingly, this transmission has involved very few changes: the ‘technology’ of magic has remained firmly intact. The emphasis is upon specific magical techniques such as the invocation of the gods, the binding of demons, the use of the four demon Kings, the construction of a circle and lamen (for protection of the magician). The requirements of purity, sexual abstinence, and fasting have changed little in the last 2000 years. The concrete reasons for that are explained. The difference between amulets, talismans and phylacteries or lamens is outlined along with their methods of construction. Examples of magical circles have been taken from many sources and their construction and development traced out. Practical considerations such as choice of incense, the timing of the cutting of the wand, utilisation of rings and statues, use of the Table of Evocation, or the acquisition of a familiar spirit are explained.

The structure of a Solomonic evocation puts into perspective the reasons for each step, the use of thwarting angels, achieving invisibility, sacrifice, love magic, treasure finding, and the binding, imprisoning and licensing of spirits. The facing directions and timing of evocations have always been crucial, and these too have remained consistent. By examining the way these same methods were used again and again in the various periods, minor omissions in magical practice can be observed and repaired.

Techniques of Solomonic Magic is thus a follow on from Techniques of Graeco-Egyptian Magic. This volume investigates precise methods used by magicians from the magicians’ own handbooks rather than from the opinions of theologians, historians, anthropologists or legislators. The emphasis is on what magicians did and why.

Tools used by magicians in 7th century Alexandria, 15th century Constantinople and 19th century London are very much the same. Detailed comparisons are made chapter by chapter with 70 illustrations of magical equipment like the wand, the sword, wax and clay images and magical gems, drawn from a wide range of manuscripts and reproduced with detailed analysis. Literally hundreds of manuscripts in libraries across Europe have been read and checked to ensure this is the most detailed analysis of Solomonic magic, from the inside, ever penned.

One of the most significant books on Solomonic magic
By DK
Techniques of Solomonic Magic is introduced as part of Skinner’s Ph.D. dissertation, others being Techniques of Graeco-Egyptian Magic (which has been published—Singapore: Golden Hoard Press, 2014), and two further works on the practice of Graeco-Egyptian and Solomonic magic, which are forthcoming. While the already-published titles present intertwined material, this review treats only Techniques of Solomonic Magic. No doubt, this work can stand alone.

Skinner, who is both an experienced practitioner and a judicious scholar, is very careful to define and delimit just what Solomonic method entails (most succinctly in his APPENDIX 6: “The Classic Solomonic Method”). In this, he preserves Solomonic method as “learned magic,” as distinct from “folk magic or village magic,” which would include the English “cunning man,” the hoodoo “conjure man,” and witchcraft (pages 20-21).

The title, Techniques of Solomonic Magic, might lead one to think that this is an instruction book, for the words “practice,” “methods,” and “techniques,” are often used interchangeably. Skinner draws a distinction between “practice” and the other two terms, reserving for “practice” the performative (read “practical”) aspects of his subject. In Techniques of Solomonic Magic, Skinner seeks to determine the historic trajectory of the “techniques” and “methods” of what has coalesced as Solomonic magic.

In composing this trajectory, Skinner has marshaled and built upon a broad array of recent scholarship. More importantly, he has done a vast amount of original research, basing his observations and comparisons directly on the pertinent texts, whether in printed editions or unique manuscripts, the vast majority of which Skinner viewed first-hand. Skinner’s research encompasses more than his years formally working towards his Ph.D. Indeed, his long and admirable career has in large part been involved with the grimoire tradition. In a more concentrated way, the works published in Golden Hoard’s SOURCEWORKS OF CEREMONIAL MAGIC series, for which Skinner edited eight volumes and, of these, co-authored six, serve as a preamble to the production of Skinner’s dissertation.

The value of Techniques of Solomonic Magic goes far beyond Skinner’s conclusions about where the material in the Key of Solomon came from, for Skinner has presented his entire scholarly process, complete with charts (vast outlines of text groups and manuscripts), tables (comparing details of various texts), and illustrations, for us to engage. Skinner admits, in so many words, that the book and, for that matter, his entire dissertation project are works in progress. Case in point: after delivering evidence for his suggestion that Apotelesmatik' Pragmateia by Stephanos is “an early version or forerunner of the Hygromanteia” (page 69), he adds, “I would be happy to have this attribution refuted, but only if a better candidate for the authorship of the Hygromanteia can be discovered.”

Skinner often acknowledges that further research may lead to different conclusions regarding various issues surrounding his primary thesis, but he presents, in overwhelming detail, his case quite convincingly. To me, of Skinner’s conclusions, the following (ii and iii of xix) are by far the most important (page 280):

(ii) There is a clear line of transmission from the Hygromanteia to the Clavicula Salomonis which is identifiable down to the very detailed level of Solomonic method and specific pieces of equipment. Therefore there can be no doubt that the Hygromanteia is the forefather of the Clavicula Salomonis.

(iii) There are two main exceptions to the above point: (a) the scrying chapters in the Hygromanteia have not been passed on to the Clavicula Salomonis. These scrying methods are however found almost word-for-word in an 11th-century Jewish source; accordingly, the Jewish sources probably supplied these chapters to the Hygromanteia; (b) the pentacles chapters in the Clavicula Salomonis do not derive from the Hygromanteia, but probably come from the manuscript Sepher ha-Otot, or from a related Hebrew source.

Thus, the trend away from believing that the Solomonic grimoires had Jewish origins is in part confirmed yet in part reversed through Skinner’s discoveries and observations.

Techniques of Solomonic Magic is not a magic instruction book—the description above provided by Amazon accurately identifies the work. We will have to wait to see what Skinner’s sequel on the practice of Solomonic magic provides. But anyone who has collected grimoires in the Solomonic tradition can here, in the channels that Skinner has excavated, find an enormous amount of information about the province and composition of the oft reproduced texts (The Key of Solomon, The Lemegeton, Agrippa’s Three Books of Occult Philosophy, etc.) while learning that not all of the famous grimoires are “Solomonic,” and acquaint themselves with less-known magic works from antiquity and medieval times that contributed to Solomonic literature.

About the Author
Becky Lamb is a builder, junker, repurposer, blogger, crafter, teacher, wife, and mother of three. She likes to say she was weaned on decoupage glue and feels blessed to be raised by a mom who decorated their home on a very limited budget. Becky has been crafting and creating as long as she can remember and discovered her love for building after “retiring” in 2000 from teaching elementary school. Her husband patiently taught her to use power tools and she has continued to hone and develop her skills and style. When not building, Becky enjoys spending time outdoors with her family in her home state, Montana.

DIY pallet project must have book!
By Pen Name
I've been following her blog and pinning her projects on Pinterest for quite sometime. Her book is great for beginners and experts alike. It has great tips to get you started, she is so creative and I admire her work so much! I've been so fortunate to find her ideas and have them inspire me within my own home, it's very difficult finding furniture in Okinawa so this book and her blog have been an amazing help in furnishing our home with the little resources we have on this island. This book is definitely worth checking out!

Crafting with Class
By Zaabaa
One of my hobbies is browsing the free section on Craigslist, and I've recently been noticing a lot of pallets up for grabs. Continuing with this train of thought, I called some local businesses (grocery stores, home depot, etc.) to see if they had pallets to give away as well. I wanted to make something with all this wood, but I wasn't sure what, so I bought this book. I was really happy that it offered suggestions on where to get pallets, and many of the suggestions lined up with my own searching, and was most excited that it included a section on pallet quality. One of the things I had trouble with on my own was collecting a lot of pallets, and having discrepancies in quality, size, and color. Thanks to this book I now know why!

Beyond this basic information I was quite happy with the things this book recommends to build with pallets. The projects range from easy (key hanger) to pretty hard (wine bar), and each instruction is easy to follow. Lamb also includes overviews of all the tools one may need while working with pallets, and includes which auxiliary parts may be necessary (metal hooks, etc.). I also love that Lamb includes ideas for what to do with pallet scraps such as a memory game. Since one of the main reasons I got this book was to reduce global waste, and get into recycling wood into art, I very much like her 'use every part approach.' Very cool book for the handyperson of any age! Could see it being a really fun time for a dynamic parent/child pair.

Becky Lamb Knows Her Stuff- Crafting with Wood Pallets is Destined to Become a Gift-Giving Favorite!
By DENNIS DE ROSE
CRAFTING WITH WOOD PALLETS by BECKY LAMB is a very eye-catching book. Take a look at the cover. What do you see? You see 4 very functional wood projects crafted from hardwood pallets or crates. This book was well thought out. Even the cover is constructed of an easy to grasp non-slip plastic material that will clean up easily even if your project gets a bit messy. The pages are high gloss making them very readable and easy to see. All pictures are colorful, informative and detailed. The book is complete with a Table of Contents, an Index, a list of Resources in the back and it even has a Metric Conversion chart as well. Right off the bat, I can see that Becky is very organized; she knows her stuff!

Her Introduction gives the reader some background about her and how she became involved in the art of Pallet Creations.I really appreciate that little detail. Her Pallet 101 segment details what a pallet is, what it is made of, using the right pallet for the right project and the tools you'll need to craft your projects.

Each of the 25+ projects includes a detailed explanation of its usefulness, the tools you'll need to make it, detailed pictures and assembly instructions including the time it should take to make and its level of difficulty (beginner, intermediate or expert). Many of the projects include Pallet Pointers, useful tips to help you create a nice looking handy household item. Becky really has thought of everything to help you make some wonderful pallet creations including sites on the Net loaded with more pallet and crate projects. Once you see this book there is a very good chance that you'll want to purchase a few more copies for friends and relatives. This will quickly become one of your gift-giving favorites. I showed my copy to 2 or 3 friends and they are chomping at the bit to either borrow mine or they have hinted to me that CRAFTING WITH WOOD PALLETS would be a gift from me that they would cherish for a very long time.

The Ballad of Radheya: A Legend from India, by K R Sharanya

Born to the sun god and the earthly princess, Kanti, Radheya's birthright is to inherit sovereignty over all the kingdoms of the earth. But a quirk of fate sees the new born baby abandoned on the waves of the River Ganges - not to learn of his true identity until hours before his glorious death some four decades later. Though he is raised in obscurity by humble peasants, Radheya's natural kingly qualities cannot be covered by the poverty and disadvantage of his circumstances. They shine through like sun's rays through dark storm clouds, and, against all odds, Radheya makes his mark on the world. The Ballad of Radheya tells the life story of one of the most poignant figures of the great Indian epic, the Mahabharata.

From Kirkus Reviews
Sharanya presents a succinct retelling of the tragic, heroic life of one of the central characters of the ancient Indian epic The Mahabharata.

This slim debut, written in verse and adorned with illustrations, begins in India circa 3000 B.C. A contentious old sage gives 13-year-old Princess Kanti a magical mantra to call down any god from the heavens, but unbeknownst to her, the mantra’s true purpose is to impregnate her with a god’s progeny. Thus Kanti naively summons Surya Narayan, the god of the sun, who explains that he is to be her child’s father, and immediately, baby Radheya—clad in gold earrings and a gold breastplate—springs from Kanti’s ear. Kanti, afraid of what people may think of her, places her son in a box of carved sandalwood and sets him sailing in the River Ganga, where Atirath, the charioteer, and his kindly wife, Radha, discover him. This colorful story focuses on Radheya’s heroic nature—he becomes known as the “Greatest of Givers”—and the irony that he’s a member of the nobility while his adoptive parents are of a lower class. In one of the book’s final scenes, Radheya must battle his own brothers, but throughout this book, regardless of temptation or sorrow, Radheya remains steadfastly loyal to his loved ones. Sharanya’s poetic style makes for easy reading, as in a poignant scene in which Radheya is briefly reunited with his birth mother: “Yes, Queen Kanti, I have heard you are my mother! / Oh, my mother, darling mother, now come near! / Why did you make me sorrow in your absence / when I wanted just to glimpse you all these years?” Sanskrit and Hindi words appear in the text, and some word endings have been changed to suit the poetry. The book’s brevity may be off-putting to readers looking for more character development, plot details or battle scenes, but overall, it’s an effective introduction to the dynamic legend of Radheya.

An often engaging ballad that may compel readers to further explore The Mahabharata.

Review
This retelling of a Hindu saga combines the author’s flair for poetic expression with her talents as a graphic artist.
The Ballad of Radheya, by English writer and artist K R Sharanya, is a poetic, illustrated version of a thought-provoking tale from the great Hindu saga the Mahabharata.
To Hindus, the complex history of the warrior Radheya is well known: he was a child of Princess Kanti, a mortal girl, and Surya, the sun god. The child, born with golden earrings and a shield foretelling his heroic exploits, was set in a little boat and discovered by a humble charioteer and his wife, who gave him his earthly name.
When he grew up, Radheya pretended to be a Brahmin and found an apprenticeship with a great guru of warfare. When the teacher learned he had been tricked, he cursed (a Brahmin’s curse will always come true) the young man: at a critical moment in battle, Radheya would forget his warrior’s training and be killed. His eventual death heralded the end of the great wars chronicled in the Mahabharata. Radheya is often cited in Hindu teaching as an example of extreme generosity and loyalty.
Sharanya has put Radheya’s story into simple English poetry, mostly quatrains. The plot is orderly and easy to grasp, closely following the classical account.
The volume is greatly enhanced by Sharanya’s remarkable line drawings. These illustrations, done with pencil, are rich and complex. Expressing both emotion and allegory, they grace the beginning of each chapter. For the interior, the attention paid to detail is evident; there are four well centered quatrains per page and an attractive background pattern of an Indian motif in pale gray.
The Ballad of Radheya fits well into the genre of Eastern religious tales for young readers. With its combination of the author’s flair for poetic expression and her talents as a graphic artist, it is likely to gain favorable attention.

About the Author
Krishna Rose Sharanya is a British writer with an interest in Indian literature and in India’s mystical teachings on reincarnation and the spiritual self. As a university student in 1989, she found herself reading alongside each other Kamala Subramaniam’s English translation of the Mahabharata and Alfred Lord Tennyson’s The Lady of Shalott, both of which captivated her immensely. Of all the many tales and threads of life stories contained in the Mahabharata, it is the life story of the character Radheya that has remained with her throughout the years as the most compelling, and she became inspired to showcase Radheya’s story in a book of its own in classical style English poetry inspired by Tennyson, and decorated with her sensitive pencil illustrations. Krishna enjoys traveling to different countries around the world, and spent a number of years in India visiting the ancient historical sites that were the settings of the stories in the Mahabharata. She also runs a teaching consultancy in England called Avesha Presentations Hinduism Workshops for Schools, which provides support to religious education teachers around Britain and gives thousands of students of all ages each year an adventuresome day of storytelling from the Mahabharata and exploring India’s timeless philosophical ideas and culture. In the summer of 2013, Krishna began work on a series of novels for children featuring themes of mysticism and reincarnation.

A fantastic Book for lovers of Indian legends
By Sheila Carlisle
Sharanya had very skillfully crafted the ballad around a tragic hero from the Indian epic; The Mahabharata.

The story is retold in a beautiful verse form with a very evocative tone. From the on set the narration is carried by the traditional Indian code of conducts and ethics and the characters firmly adhere to act within this frame. For example, the serving of a holy man guest by a pure girl and the gratitude showed to her for her service. The narration takes us through few of the personal challenges of the charterers as they are torn over moral dilemmas who contrast with their cultural ethics. For example, an unmarried mother is giving up her child in order to adhere to social respectability. The story line, although focuses on the character of Radheya, also encompasses the historical events, battles and rich political scenes from which Radheya is gloriously emerged.
Highly recommended book, with educational merit as well as a pleasure to read.

Used in teaching Fifth Grade students
By Charlotte Daniels
The poetic style of The Ballad of Radheya is reminiscent of Tennyson's "The Lady of Shalott," and the language level is comparable. Having just read "The Lady of Shalott," my fifth grade students saw this ballad as a similar sort of beautiful romantic tale from India. The students loved the book, and reading it has fit in really well with our cultural studies of India. Some talented and gifted children have now gone on to explore the exciting Indian epic, the Mahabharata, from which the story of Radheya is taken. I would recommend this book for students in grades 5 through 12, and also for adult readers.

Anyone interested in the ancient Hindu scriptures should read this. It is well written and a gripping read. Very tragic. A movie should be made from it.”
