The book's success is rooted in the no-nonsense approach of author Simon, the founding editor of the wildly successful Harvard Men's Health Watch newsletter, who has long been urging men to get in shape and stay that way. Simon uses the results of three Harvard studies of more than 95,000 men over the last 25 years to provide five main "answers" (diet, exercise, aspirin and other supplements, moderate alcohol, and behavior modification and stress control) to five main "maladies of men" (disorders of the genital area, sexuality and reproduction, benign prostate disorders, prostate cancer, and kidney and bladder disorders). Along the way, he discusses other topics such as reproductive anatomy, vitamins, depression, Viagra and herbal medications. Basing his advice on three long-term Harvard studies that have tracked more than 96,000 men for many years, Simon reviews programs of diet, exercise, supplements, stress control, and medical care, and addresses frequently asked questions (e.g., should I take a daily aspirin?, is wine really good for me?, and should I have a PSA blood test?). Much like a very caring family doctor, Simon presents both sides of issues and lets the reader know what the evidence recommends as best practice. Simon's comprehensive, informative book is based on three major studies of U.S. men's health carried out during several decades. The subjects studied were mostly white, well-educated, and well-to-do, so the results aren't broadly applicable, yet they provide a solid base from which the book's users may benefit. Major areas covered include the prostate, vitamins and supplements, depression, and the very fine line between healthful and hazardous drinking. The contents are disposed in three parts on basic information, what keeps men healthy, and what can go wrong. Occasional illustrations and tables clarify and emphasize important points. Simon is optimistic throughout, sometimes almost overly optimistic--for example, in his discussion of potential diagnoses and treatments of Alzheimer's disease. Also, he seems to suggest that longevity is more important than quality of life, an attitude with which many readers may differ. Still, he offers much that will help many men and the members of their families who may need to do a little arm-twisting to make them seek help. William Beatty

The best men's medical reference book

This is an excellent medical reference book for men. The information is very well organized into three separate parts: 1) what makes men different, 2) what makes men healthy, and 3) men's main diseases, how to prevent them, test for them, and treat them. The book is quite long at 470 pages. But, it reads easily. And, it makes for an excellent medical reference to go back to when you want specific scientific information on various men's health topics.
The best part about the book is that it is based on extensive medical studies. The advice provided is the result of statistically significant conclusions derived from these studies. Thus, the objectivity, integrity, and intelligence derived from this book is so much greater than from any of the medical authors positioning themselves as the current diet or health care guru.
The book confirms the value of EFV. The ultimately healthy lifestyle consists of a lot of Exercise with a diet that includes lots of Fruits and Vegetables. These three factors (exercise, fruits, vegetables) appear to be universal protectors against all age related diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Similarly, the high risk factors regardless of the health risk considered seemed to be always the same, including: smoking, obesity, lack of exercise, lots of saturated fats and trans fats in the diet.
The book has a ton of information besides the self-evident basics mentioned above. There are lots of tables, graphs, and summaries that make the information easy to retrieve. These include info on BMI, PSA test levels, blood pressure and cholesterol levels, recommended frequencies of screening tests, recommended dosage and toxic levels of vitamins and minerals, Glycemic index, life expectancy charts, and lots more interesting stuff.
With the medical knowledge derived from this book, you will be in a far better position to take care of your health and initiate a mutually productive dialogue with your general practitioners and specialists. The World is getting increasingly complex. Technology and science evolve rapidly. Nowhere does this increasing complexity have a greater impact than on healthcare. This book will help you understand your health, risk factors, relevant testing, and cures to be considered.
As we age, we will invariably be faced with some challenging options and decisions. This book is a great road map to help us out along the way. If you are well informed, it takes a lot of anxiety out of the equation. That takes care of a major health risk already [stress and anxiety]. This book is good for you!
Along the same line of excellent health related information, I also strongly recommend another great book from Harvard Health Publications: "Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy" by Walter C. Willett. It is the best book on diet and nutrition I have ever read. And, that is also because it is based on scientific studies, and not on subjective opinions from egocentric blowhards.

Great reference and actually fun to read

I've subscribed to the Harvard Men's Health Watch newsletter for years, and I look forward to my new issue each month. So I was eager to read this book, which is written by the newsletter's editor. It totally lived up to my expectation. This book contains a wealth of information, and the writing is engaging and understandable without being patronizing. I've learned a lot about health from the newsletter, but this book is even better (and easier to use as a reference!). Having just turned 40, I have more health questions than I'd like to admit to, and I find this book a great guide. My rating is "Excellent."

About the Author

RONALD J. DEIBERT is professor of Political Science and Director of the Canada Centre for Global Security Studies and the Citizen Lab at the Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto, an interdisciplinary research and development “hothouse” working at the intersection of the Internet, global security, and human rights. He is a co-founder and a principal investigator of the OpenNet Initiative and the Information Warfare Monitor, which uncovered the GhostNet cyberespionage network of over 2,500 infected computers in 103 countries. Deibert’s work has received frontpage coverage in the Toronto Star, Globe and Mail, International Herald Tribune, and New York Times. He lives in Toronto with his family.

Understand the deep story on NSA cyber spying

This is not a book by a journalist who needs to ask experts to figure out the deep story. This is a book by a true expert who has spearheaded some of the most powerful investigations into internet spying. If you want some depth and perspective on the NSA scandal, look no further. Told in an engaging style, this is an essential update from the front lines of cyber crime and cyber warfare.

a meticulous but accessible examination of threats to Internet stability / security

Ron Deibert's book is a meticulous examination of the "malicious threats that are growing from the inside out" on the Internet and which "threaten to destroy the fragile ecosystem we have come to take for granted." Deibert is worried about the way various forces and factors are working together to undermine online stability and security, and even delegitimize liberal democracy itself.

The clear and colloquial tone that Deibert employs in the text helps make these arcane Internet security issues interesting and accessible. Some chapters of the book almost feel like they were pulled from the pages of techno-thriller, complete with villainous characters, unexpected plot twists, and shocking conclusions. "Cyber crime has become one of the world's largest growth businesses," Deibert notes and his chapters focus on many prominent recent examples.

Deibert is uniquely qualified to narrate this tale not just because he is a gifted story-teller but also because he and his colleagues at The Citizen Lab at the Univ. of Toronto have occasionally been major players in this drama as they have researched and uncovered various online vulnerabilities affecting millions of people across the globe.

What Deibert is grappling with in this book is the same fundamental problem that has long plagued the Internet: How do you preserve the benefits associated with the most open and interconnected "network of networks" the world has ever known while also remedying the various vulnerabilities and pathologies created by that same openness and interconnectedness?

The only problem with Deibert's book is that he does such a nice job itemizing and describing these security vulnerabilities that by the time the reader wades through 230 pages and nears the end of the book, they are left in a highly demoralized state, searching for some hope and a concrete set of practical solutions. Unfortunately, they won't find an abundance of either in Deibert's brief closing chapter. Deibert does offer a principle vision of distributed security and digital stewardship to counter the growing push by governments to "clamp down" of cyberspace, but his approach is highly aspirational in nature and lacks concrete details. Deibert would have been wise to spend a bit more time developing this alternative "bottom-up" vision of how online security should work and bolstering it with case studies of how it already works well in practice today.

Regardless, Ron Deibert's "Black Code" is a sweeping exploration of these issues that makes substantial contributions to the field of Internet policy studies. It is an excellent resource for students, scholars, and policy wonks alike.

A Timely Look at Privacy in a Connected World

The privacy vs security debate in cyberspace has quickly emerged at the forefront of political discussion. News feeds are constantly overwhelmed with headlines of new data breaches, acts of cyber espionage, and malware exploits every day. Clearly, appropriate and timely action must be taken, but what exactly does that entail and who are the key players in such a solution? Ronald Deibert attempts to answer this and many more questions in his latest book, Black Code.

Delivered like a novel or a great narrative at times, Black Code is a gripping page-turner that provides first and secondhand accounts on a wide variety of conflicts in cyberspace. China's cyber espionage of the exiled Tibetan government through the DarkComet RAT and koobface, the Russian-based botnet created for the sole purpose of enabling Facebook click fraud are both thoroughly reported. The diversity and quantity of major cyber events covered is significant and despite having read numerous books on the subject, I found myself learning a substantial amount.

Some of my discontent with Black Code has to do with the constant nods to The Citizen Lab. Given the author's affiliation, I'd consider this to be standard affair and not much of a detriment, but it occasionally gets noticeable enough to distract from the actual content. Also, I was somewhat put off by the constant aggression towards government officials throughout. Surely disagreement can be had without attacks on physical appearances and other such tactics?

My minor complaints aside, Black Code is engaging, well written, and goes into more detail on a wider range of cyber events than any other book I've read on the topic. If you're even slightly interested in getting a better grasp on the complexities of the privacy vs security debate from the pro-privacy side then I'd highly recommend adding Black Code to your bookshelf.

During the past two decades public policy analysis has focused on the role of implementation as a distinct phenomenon in the creation of policy output. More recently, implementation researchers have called for a major reevaluation of the process of policy formation itself. This book presents an overview of why implementation research has contributed to this major reconsideration and offers conceptual frameworks that employ implementation research to develop a fuller understanding of the entire policy process. It attempts to narrow the divide between the assumptions of the earlier and later implementation researchers. The contributors to this book aim at clarifying the relationship between implementation research and public policy analysis. They caution against the error of assuming that implementation is the main factor in policy making and that once implementation is taken care of, policies will be effective. They attempt to place implementation in the broader policy making process and show its relationship to the other parts of the policy cycle. Additionally, several of the contributors develop explanatory models that cut across the research dichotomies of the prevailing top-down and bottom-up approaches and establish an agenda for future research.

The book is divided into three parts; within each the chapters are organized by questions that move from the more empirical to more methodological and theoretical concerns. The chapters in the first section deal with policy design issues and empirical aspects of implementation research. Those in part two present implementation's special contribution to the policy field, discussing how policy implementation adapts to changing organizational, intergovernmental, and ideological circumstances. The generalizations made by the authors focus on the contribution implementation research makes to understanding the entire policy process. The final section includes chapters that capture and extend the observations of the other contributors. These essays also develop generalizations and suggest various lines of future research. The final chapter both summarizes implementation's contributions and proposes an interpretive model that will forward future research. This comprehensive work can be used in courses on public policy and administration, and social welfare.

Dennis J. Palumbo is regents professor of justice studies, political science and Director of the PhD program in the school of Justice Studies at Arizona State University. He is the author of numerous articles, books, and research monographs in the area of political and social studies. He is also the founder and current co-editor of Policy Studies Review.

Donald J. Calista is director of the Graduate Center for Public Policy and Administration at Marist College. He has lectured at Hiroshima University and his current research involves the application of the transaction costs economics framework to understanding public sector organizations. What we think of as the “mind” is little more than an illusion. That’s the provocative thesis of British philosopher Gilbert Ryle’s 1949 work The Concept of Mind.

Seventeenth-century French writer Ren� Descartes, one of the fathers of philosophy, imagined the mind and body as two separate entities that combine to form a human being. This concept came to be called “mind-body dualism.” Ryle set about ridiculing Descartes’s idea of, as he put it, a “ghost in the machine” stating that it was “entirely false, and false not in detail but in principle … not merely an assemblage of particular mistakes. It is one big mistake and a mistake of a special kind.”

Ryle argues that our distinction between concepts pertaining to the mind and others pertaining to matter arise from a problematic use of language (and particularly through what he calls “category mistakes”).

In The Concept of Mind, his best-known and most important book, Ryle establishes a new branch of philosophy, “the philosophy of mind.” The work remains an important statement in mid-twentieth-century philosophy.

A fun read but shallow and badly over done

This book has some very good points and some astonishingly serious problems. First the basics. This book covers the exploits of the Australian Army in the Mediterranean during the first years of World War II. The author (probably justly) felt that the contributions to the war by the Australian fighting men have been grossly under appreciated being overshadowed by other nations legendary accomplishments such as the British at Dunkirk, the RAF over London, and the American's in Normandy. He also feels that in Australia the national legend surrounding the Anzacs at Gallipoli during WWI crowd out in the national psyche the exploits of their sons in WWII. He sets out to correct this grievous oversight.

Unfortunately, he makes several serious mistakes in the attempt. First, he spends an inordinate amount of time on the back-story. Chapters are devoted to the early lives of Hitler and Mussolini and the interwar years are covered in great depth to no useful effect (they don't really effect the main line of the story). The story does not even get to the defense of Tobruk until the middle of the book. This was frustrating but is not a fatal flaw as the reader may simply skip ahead. However, much much worse is the authors absolutely bizarre use of language. The entire text is written in an irreverent stream of Australian gutter slang . He has made up scores of them. The author simply has never found a picturesque, folksy, Ausie phrase that he didn't like. For example, instead of a unit withdrawing rapidly it "Ran like an emu stung by a bee on the but." The entire book is written in such language. That would be fine if it were the words of the participants or subjects but is obnoxious when they are the invention of the author. He was also frankly disrespectful of both the German and the Italian soldiers at times. After a while this became VERY tedious.

One has the feeling that he was trying to write a moving screen-play rather than serious history. It is possible that he simply was pitching his story to a much lower level perhaps to gain and keep the attention of much younger readers. I suspect the problem is that he is a journalist trying to write history without the discipline required and has perhaps confused crudity with accessibility.

That said, there was some excellent history and the story of the Australians during WWII has not been well documented and it was good to see it done in detail. He also captured the human elements brilliantly. I would recommend this book to any of the following: Those interested in the WWII Mediterranean campaign PRIOR to Operation Torch; Australians; those who like their history very engaging and are not too picky about historical discipline. All in all, and using the type of comparison the author used a lot, the book was like a cheap Australian Chardonnay, very fruity and with a lot of oak but lacking in depth and complexity.

A Ripping Yarn

The Author seems to have set out to write a ripping yarn rather than a serious historical analysis. It turns into parochial diatribe about what amazing warriors us Aussies are and how we taught the Germans and Italians a thing or two about how to fight, most of which is simply incorrect.

I won't be reading on of his books again.

Hard to take seriously

I wanted to like this book and I do have a genuine interest in the supposed subject of the book, the battle of Tobruk. The author doesn't get there until nearly halfway through the book after some very wide-ranging set-up. The background info on some of the Australian soldiers in the story is understandable. Much of the rest I found to be tedious as someone who is fairly well-read. Perhaps others not so familiar with the broader history of the Second World War will find this aspect of the book more interesting. What bothered me the most was the author's incessant use of slang and even tasteless language. Some of this is acceptable when encountered in a memoir but the author here seems to be trying to spice up the book and it doesn't work for me. This book turned out to be one of the rare books I failed to finish to the end.

The many forms of molecular crystals: theory and applications

The term polymorphism, meaning many forms, is employed in many fields of science but in the context of chemical crystallography it refers to the possibility that one compound can crystallize in two (or more) different arrangements. Hence, each such arrangement of molecules in the solid (a polymorph) represents a different phase of the compound. Bernstein's book provides an excellent overview of the field of polymorphysm as concerned to molecular crystals. The initial part of the book provides historical information and a discussion on the terminology used in this field. This is followed by a discussion of the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of polymorphism as well as of the experimental methods (spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, etc.) that are currently employed in the study of this phenomenon. Computational approaches to the study of polymorphism also are discussed and specific references are provided so that the reader can deepen his or her knowledge. The last part of the book is concerned with applications in the fields of pharmaceutical chemistry, dyes and pigments, and high-energy materials. The book is highly recommended to those that are interested in studying the structural and energetic aspects of molecular crystals.
