The Three Temples: On the Emergence of Jewish Mysticism, by Rachel Elior

In this ground-breaking study, Rachel Elior offers a comprehensive theory of the crystallization of the early stages of the mystical tradition in Judaism based on the numerous ancient scrolls and manuscripts published in the last few decades. Her wide-ranging research, scrupulously documented, enables her to demonstrate an uninterrupted line linking the priestly traditions of the Temple, the mystical liturgical literature found in the Qumran caves and associated directly and indirectly with the Merkavah tradition of around the second and first centuries BCE, and the mystical works of the second to fifth centuries CE known as Heikhalot literature. The key factor linking all these texts, according to Professor Elior's theory, is that many of those who wrote them were members of the priestly classes. Prevented from being able to perform the rituals of sacred service in the Temple as ordained in the biblical tradition, they channelled their religious impetus in other directions to create a new spiritual focus. The mystical tradition they developed centred first on a heavenly Chariot Throne known as the Merkavah, and later on heavenly sanctuaries known as Heikhalot. In this way the priestly class developed an alternative focus for spirituality, based on a supertemporal liturgical and ritual relationship with ministering angels in the supernal sanctuaries. This came to embrace an entire mystical world devoted to sustaining religious liturgical tradition and ritual memory in the absence of the Temple. This lyrical investigation of the origins and workings of this supernal world is sure to become a standard work in the study of early Jewish mysticism.

Review
'Very readable ... This is only the second of Elior's many Hebrew works to be translated into English. Hopefully, it is the harbinger of many more. I recommend this work for inclusion in all academic and theological collections.' Daniel J. Rettberg, AJL Newsletter 'In this major work, senior scholar Rachel Elior demonstrates her sure command over a broad swath of ancient esoteric texts, examining together sources usually treated in isolation ... Elior has put forward a series of incisive ... arguments that are sure to provoke discussion.' G. Spinner, Choice 'This very worthwhile work deserves praise for its breathtaking scope, its bold courage, and its brilliant creativity.' Andrea Lieber, Journal of Religion 'Elior succeeds in her attempt at answering the question constantly discussed in the scholarship on early Jewish mysticism, by and for whom the poetic descriptions of heavenly palaces were written ... What makes her exposition exciting is its reversal of the existing view ... Rachel Elior's sketch of a different picture of early Judaism, which is written with much verve, has opened up many new problems for research. Her book does not merely deal with the origin of Jewish mysticism, but with the foundations of Judaism and thereby, even in its method, breaks down disciplinary barriers.' Gerold Necker, Judaica 'Innovative ... This is an important book for anyone interested in the Qumran sectaries and in the origins of the Jewish mystical tradition. It is well written, lays out its arguments clearly, and can be highly recommended.' Morris M. Faierstein, Religious Studies Review

An important book that could have been a great book
By Geoffrey W. Dennis
In this book, Dr. Rachel Elior does a masterful job of reconstructing the origins of early Jewish(Merkavah) mysticism, tracing it to the priestly spirituality that shaped such Biblical books as Ezekiel and Isaiah, then tracking its evolution in Apocalyptic works such as I Enoch, Jubilees and the Testament of Levi, its mutation into a dualistic, secterian priestly mysticism as expressed in the Dead Sea Scrolls, and finally being "rabbinized" through the Hechalot literature of Merkavah mysticism.
Elior makes a compelling argument, collecting the available data and giving it a coherent, reasonable interpretation. The resulting narrative is so neatly done, in fact, that one is left doubtful only in that it seems so logical that it must, on some level, be an oversimplification. History just isn't usually this tidy. That said, any criticism I could offer would only be only peripheral points. Her thesis seems very sound to me and melds well with the data. This is therefore a very important book, one that dramatically advances our understanding of early Jewish mysticism.
It is an important book, but not a great one, for the simple lack of an assertive editor. This 265 page book needed only to be about 175 pages. The constant repetition of ideas, points, and the same illustrative texts, is both tedious and unnecessary. Elior feels compelled to review the same conceptual clusters (four directions, sevens, Shavuot, the solar calendar of weeks divided into 13, priestly-angels)laundry-list like, every few pages. The Rabbinic text Chagigah 2:1 must be cited, en toto, at least four times.
But this stylistic shortcoming should not prevent one form reading this work. Just be prepared to scan a bit in order to get to the pithy parts.

Filling the gaps in Jewish mysticism
By Richard J. Grebenc
With this book, Rachel Elior has contributed a great deal to the literature of Jewish mysticism. By taking a fresh look at this area in light of the discovery of, and subsequent work on, the Dead Sea Scrolls, she has done much to round out the picture of the development of Jewish mysticism from the time of Solomon all the way to the time of the Mishnah, and even to the present day.

That being said, I felt there were some omissions. I would have liked to have seen more discussion on how Jewish mysticism in general related to mysticism in other religions of the periods discussed. A footnote (no. 76 on pp.77-78) gives a tantalizing taste of Egyptian, Babylonian, Assyrian, and even Gnostic and Mithraic cosmology, but it is up to the reader to do the additional research. But since little cultural and religious development happens in a vacuum, more detail about external influences intertwined as the book moved along through the stages of history would have been valuable. Additionally, within Judaism, an explanation of the impact of the differing views of the Zadokites and Sages on each other would have been welcome. Chapter nine lists in wonderful detail the stark differences between the different traditions religious and world views, but not a whole lot is said about how they affected each other practically in history. How did they deal with each other over time (we only get the ending)? How much did polemics lead to this deep separation (this is discussed, but only sparingly)?

Also, the author really seems to favor the secessionist view. I do not believe the appropriate balance was struck here. Rather there was a real sense that the rabbis were viewed as heavy-handed in the suppression of the secessionist texts. Even if the rabbis were harsh, more discussion is required as to the underlying reasons. They were defending the truth as they saw it, and the canon that comes down to us today is due to their diligence.

Another rather large oversight was that there is absolutely no mention of the non-priestly class. I think it would have been fascinating and informative to know how the lay person interacted with and viewed the priestly class in both traditions. How did ministering to the people affect the priest's role? How did the populace at large view the priests? Were they regarded with the importance they felt they should have? How did all of this affect the trajectory of the traditions? To read the book, one would barely know there was a laity.

As far as the way the book was edited, I would have liked to have seen more subheadings within chapters, shorter paragraphs, and more tables and charts. Some of the material is tough-going and rather dry, especially when there is in depth discussion about the importance of numbers (see most notably chapter two, but it occurs elsewhere also). Gratefully there are a couple of solar calendar charts and a table of dates dealing with Noah's time on the ark, but otherwise these discussions get bogged down in a morass of dates and numbers. I was grateful to have chapter nine broken down into sections for each of fourteen oppositional characteristics between secessionist and rabbinic texts, but there was only one other chapter that was broken up in more manageable pieces (but just two). Granted this is a scholarly work that will be of little interest to most casual readers, but that doesn't mean that it can't be made more accessible by presenting the material in smaller, more accessible sections. Run on paragraphs may be a part of the challenge of translating from another language, and overall the translator seems to have done a great job, but here again accessibility is aided when the concepts come in smaller packages.

In spite of these criticisms, much of value can be culled out of this book by the careful, interested reader. Filling the gaps in the previously widely accepted version of the development of Jewish mysticism provides the biblical scholar, historian, even archeologist, with food for thought when looking at Judaism over the thirteen or so centuries covered in this volume.

The Significance of Rituals and Symbols
By S. E. Moore
As as an armchair student of Christianity, this book has given me tremendous insights into ancient rituals which on the surface seem like nonsense if one doesn't understand what they represent. Margaret Barker, a Christian scholar, has done an outstanding job in correlating Jewish Temple rituals with early church liturgies. Rachel Elior, a Jewish scholar, goes into detail about the significance of the solar calendar, the cycle of worship and numerical patterns of the older Temple.

Elior traces the Heikhalot literature, the Merkavah tradition, some of the Qumran writings, and apocalyptic writings to a pre-Hasmonean Zadokite priesthood which placed special emphasis on books such as Chronicles, Ezekiel, Enoch, and Jubilees.

Elior identifies the Qumran community as a disenfranchised Zadokite priesthood who were denied access to the Temple by the Hasmoneans. She rejects the notion that they were comprised of a so called Essene sect which was described by Josephus and Philo.

Elior describes how the Temple services emulated and coincided with the services in Heaven with the Temple representing the universe and the Holy of Holies representing Heaven as illustrated in the Songs of the Sabbath Sacrifice found at Qumran. The solar calendar was established in Heaven where it was taught to Enoch and subsequently passed down to Noah, Melchizedek, Levi, and Moses. Adherence to the solar calendar which set the time for worship and festivals and divine numerical patterns was crucial in preserving the covenantal bond between Heaven and earth

Elior explains how the lunar calendar, a product of human intellect introduced by the Hasmonean priesthood and maintained by the more rationalist elements such as the Pharisees and Rabinnic Judaism, threatened to disrupt the harmony between Heaven and earth. The Zadokites thought of themselves as the guardians of a sacred covenant which was in danger of being broken by the Jerusalem priesthood. Much of this is reflected in the Dead Sea Scrolls.

The absence of a physical Temple was a crisis which was resolved by the idea of a Heavenly prototype with the Holy of Holies mystically transformed into the Chariot Throne of Ezekiel's vision. This tradition was carried on by the Qumran community who believed they were a priesthood in exile.

The Pharisees and Rabbinic Judaism, heirs of the rationalist movement, suppressed these ideas by excluding Enoch and Jubilees and claiming prophecy had ended with Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi.

However, it was the more mystical element of Judaism which inspired the Dead Sea Scrolls and Heikhalot literature. I would add that it was the more mystical element of Judaism which inspired John the Baptist (a prophet from a priestly family) who in turn inspired Jesus and the author of Revelation who undoubtedly had a priestly background.

This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in a more ancient form of Judaism which spawned the Qumran Community and helped spawn Christianity.

Studying Human Behavior: How Scientists Investigate Aggression and Sexuality, by Helen E. Longino

In Studying Human Behavior, Helen E. Longino enters into the complexities of human behavioral research, a domain still dominated by the age-old debate of “nature versus nurture.” Rather than supporting one side or another or attempting to replace that dichotomy with a different framework for understanding behavior, Longino focuses on how scientists study it, specifically sexual behavior and aggression, and asks what can be known about human behavior through empirical investigation. She dissects five approaches to the study of behavior—quantitative behavioral genetics, molecular behavior genetics, developmental psychology, neurophysiology and anatomy, and social/environmental methods—highlighting the underlying assumptions of these disciplines, as well as the different questions and mechanisms each addresses. She also analyzes efforts to integrate different approaches. Longino concludes that there is no single “correct” approach but that each contributes to our overall understanding of human behavior. In addition, Longino reflects on the reception and transmission of this behavioral research in scientific, social, clinical, and political spheres. A highly significant and innovative study that bears on crucial scientific questions, Studying Human Behavior will be essential reading not only for scientists and philosophers but also for science journalists and anyone interested in the engrossing challenges of understanding human behavior.

Review
“[A] fascinating book. . . . Longino has clearly articulated the methodological plurality of research on human behavior.” (Erika Lorraine Milam, Princeton University Science)

“In her groundbreaking book . . . Longino looks closely at a variety of scientific approaches to the study of human aggression and sexuality to argue that there is no one right way to divide nature from nurture within the scientific approaches to the study of behavior, and that the nature/nurture dichotomy reinforces and reflects an undue emphasis on explanations that focus on the dispositions of individuals rather than those that look at patterns of frequency and distribution of behavior within populations.” (Carrie Figdor New Books in Philosophy)

“[An] important contribution to the philosophy of the science(s) of human behavior. . . . [T]his is a must read for philosophers of science and behavioral scientists. . . . Recommended.” (R. F. White, College of Mount St. Joseph Choice)

"Longino has done the philosophy of science a service by providing a nonpartisan assessment of the many scientific approaches that study the nature and nurture of human behavior. She convincingly shows that we need not pick winners and losers among the approaches, but rather can think constructively about the relationship between those approaches." (James Tabery Metascience)

“Overall, this book offers a useful overview of a number of scientific approaches to investigating human behavior and a thorough examination of the existing concerns with each approach. Longino’s treatment of the different ways these approaches parse the causal space is illuminating for those interested in the sciences of human behavior, and also as a case study of how multiple approaches address a phenomenon in very different ways that are not easily reconcilable.” (Angela Potochnik, University of Cincinnati Notre Dame Philosophical Review)

"Worth reading for anyone interested in feminist philosophy of science, philosophy of biology, or social epistemology. Longino demonstrates an impressive and comprehensive engagement with the relevant science, a careful and thorough use of that scientific literature to advance an account of the pluralism and partiality of knowledge claims based in different scientific disciplines, and, finally, an approach to the sciences of behavior that has important feminist and liberatory implications. We hope this book makes it to your shelves and stimulates further feminist work in the scientific terrain Longino has so rigorously charted for us." (Sarah Weaver and Carla Fehr Hypatia: A Journal of Feminist Philosophy)

“Studying Human Behavioroffers a groundbreaking account of the sciences of human behavior. Longino’s detailed analysis of how each science investigates and explains behaviors associated with aggression and sexual orientation shows that each has more limitations than champions acknowledge and each has more power than critics grant. At a time when science is being dismissed by some and elevated to a religion by others, this book provides a model of how empirical knowledge should be examined and understood.”
(C. Kenneth Waters, University of Minnesota)

“Longino presents many insights about different general methods, assumptions, research goals, and the importance of definitions in researching behavior. I know of no other book that covers such diverse approaches.”

(Peter Machamer, University of Pittsburgh)

“Rather than taking sides in the nature/nurture debates, Longino floats above them, beautifully illustrating what philosophers do best, laying out the complexity and interrelationships among different research approaches to human aggression and sexuality. For example, she examines the ways that various biological and social fields describe behaviors, illuminating how moral values and folk psychology get infused into the deepest research concepts from the start. An extremely thoughtful, careful, and fascinating book, accessible to all those interested in the foundations of behavior.” (Elisabeth Lloyd, Indiana University)

All on the Line (A Blackwolf Hot Shots erotic novella), by Emma Jay

Jaci Nichols thinks nothing can make her feel as alive as fighting wildfires--man against nature, standing up to danger every day.
Until her crew chief, Cal Sinclair, kisses her after a close call on the fire line.
Wow.
Now she’s craving more, but he wants to keep his distance.
Cal Sinclair doesn’t want to screw up his first year as crew chief, so he keeps his distance from the members of his hot shot crew. Hard to do when the sexy rookie gets under his skin. Something about her draws him, and makes him want to put it All on the Line.

Excerpt:

Camp was quiet when they rolled in, but not sleeping, never sleeping, not with the odd comings and goings of the crews. When the Blackwolfs rolled out of the truck, some headed straight for the mess, others for tents. Jaci, he saw, headed for the showers. He considered taking the same path, but his growling stomach had other ideas. He’d chosen not to eat his last MRE in anticipation of real cooking. He stumbled instead toward the mess.
Wildland firefighting ate up a lot of calories. Otherwise he’d never consider eating biscuits and gravy and pancakes and eggs and sausage. He sat at one of the long picnic tables and admired the abundance of food on the tray before him before he dug in.
He was halfway through his pancakes and halfway toward stuffed when the bench across from him creaked. He looked up to see Jaci, shiny and clean, wearing her Blackwolf t-shirt but apparently no bra. He’d thought he was too tired to have a reaction, but his dick had other ideas.
“You smell good,” he murmured.
“Better than you,” she teased. “Did you eat all of that?” She pointed to the empty plates on his tray.
“Was hungry.”
“Is it good?”
He shoved the tray with its half-eaten stack of pancakes toward her. “Not bad.”
She took a bite. “Not bad,” she agreed.
“The line’s open. You can get your own tray.”
She shook her head, folded her arms on the table, and lowered her head to them, like a kid in trouble at school. “Too tired to chew.”
Yet she was here instead of her own tent. He lifted a brow in question. She sighed and sat up, then dragged his tray closer, used his fork and took a dainty bite. Then another. Then polished off his pancakes, sopping them through every last drop of syrup. She looked up and grinned, her lips sticky and so damned appealing. He wanted to lean across the table and lick the syrup from her mouth.
“Want more?”
“I’m good. Thanks.” She blinked sleepily and rose on a stretch that lifted her shirt and showed her belly. “You might want to hit the showers while you have a chance.”
He was so damned tired he had decided to skip a shower, but knew he’d sleep better after one. “We head out again at three.”
She grimaced and stepped over the bench. “Okay. See you.”
She stumbled away, so tired he hoped she could find her tent.

All on the Line by Emma Jay
By NReads
Recently, I've read a few books that has left me feeling kind of blah (that's the only way to describe it). I'm glad I stumbled upon this book on my Kindle. What a pleasant surprise All on the Line turned out to be. I have a weakness for heroes in a uniform and Cal Sinclair didn't disappoint. Also, the heroine, Jaci, was a firefighter and I thought she was pretty kick ass. She was also a two year survivor of cancer and I adored her for living life.

Furthermore, I loved diving into the exciting, yet dangerous world of these firefighting men and women. I appreciated the vivid descriptions that the author provided and the dash of suspense. The story was well-paced. The characters were also in-depth which was quite surprising considering how short the story is (Kindle Location 806). The characters were engaging and easy to like. The chemistry sizzled between Cal and Jaci and their relationship felt natural without being rushed. The abundance of chemistry led to sizzling sex scenes and let me just say that the sex was on fire! (no pun intended). Emma Jay sure knows how to write a sexy scene ;)

The only minor complaint that I have is that the ending ended a bit too abruptly. This story ended on a happily-for-now (HFN) which I have no issues with. My minor complaint is that I felt that the ending of the story ended in the middle of a scene. I would loved it if the ending was stretched out a bit to make the story feel more complete.

Despite that, All on the Line was well put together. I enjoyed it very much and was entertained all the way through. I hope this is a series because I would love to read about the other men on the team. Emma Jay is a new-to-me author and I'm so glad to have found a new author to read!

Would watch out for this author
By CJoyYC
I got this free on Amazon for a limited time and it was right up my alley.

This is a hot erotic contemporary short about Jaci and Cal. The author provided background for both characters, enough for the readers to understand a bit of history.

Jaci is a rookie hot shot whom Cal saved in one of the dangerous situations. I don't want to spoil anything about her history but it makes sense that she wants to be a firefighter. Cal is new crew chief who seems young for the job but has enough experience to do so. They've been fighting the attraction for awhile and it took one life and death situation for them to get together.

The scenes between them were really hot, there's the right amount of everything and both gave us good as they got. Emma Jay is an author to watch out for.

Fabulous Story
By Mrs. Helen Sibbritt
I found this book emotional and moving and such a great read from start to finish MS Hewitt has taken two people who have suffered in the past on a journey to sunshine at the end it is a rocky path but the epilogue is so good.

Sierra Rocci has led a childhood of emotional and physical abuse from a strong willed father who also controlled her mother but her mother was in love and no matter what Sierra said her mother would not listen so when her father found someone that he felt Sierra should marry at the age of nineteen Sierra agrees to get away from her father. But Sierra cannot go through with it and jilts Marco at the alter and takes off to start a new life in London never to return to Palermo until the reading of her father's will where she again meets the man she jilted and he is angry and wants answers Sierra is determined to be strong but can she resist this man.

Marco Ferranti had been an orphan he had a tough childhood but worked his way up from bellboy at one of the Rocci hotels in Palermo when he is taken under the wing of none other than the owner Arturo Rocci he treats him like a son and Marco works his way up to second in charge and is more than happy to meet his daughter the beautiful Sierra yes marriage to Sierra will be good it won't be a love match Marco doesn't need that everyone he has ever loved has left him but they will be friends and have a good family life, so when Sierra jilts him he is left shocked and angry but also wanting answers why?

Seven years later when they meet again Sierra is still beautiful but has grown and matured she seems stronger but Marco still wants answers and when Arturo leaves everything to Marco Sierra is not surprised at all and after an evening spent together this leaves them both wanting more but Sierra goes back to London. But when a new hotel is opening in New York Marco needs Sierra to help with the opening she agrees reluctantly. I can highly recommend this book it is a sizzling sensual journey that opens up a lot of dark secrets and makes them both realize they need to be open and honest for love to bloom and the sunshine at the end of the journey to shine and shine it does this one had me smiling and shedding a few tears. This really is a great story

The story one of love story and also a lonely childhood and a couple with secrets that needed to be shared.
By Cheryl A. Steckling
Inherited by Ferranti by Kate Hewitt
Sierra Rocci lived a life of her father only wanted her and her mother (his wife) when he needed them for show and to perform. Her mother loved her father but Sierra could not have that kind of love for her marriage. She had no idea what a real couple was like and she had a lonely childhood and being wanted basically for show. Then her father would call her princess and pretend as if she was his life and joy. Her father was the business mogul for hotels. He had chosen his prodigy Marco Ferranti to marry his daughter. The night before the wedding he was talking with Marco and told him that you know women have their senseless ideas and you need to keep them in line. Marco said I know how to keep Sierra in line. Sierra overheard and thought that Marco was just like her father. She could not go through with the wedding. Thankfully her mother helped her get away. Her mother had money tucked away and a friend that she could go far away and that she would help her. She handed Sierra the envelope and name and address and kissed her goodbye.
Now seven years later and both her parents had passed away and the will for her father needed her to be present. Everything but 2 things was given to Marco. Before she left again she went to say goodbye to her mother’s grave. But Marco found her there feeling she was trespassing on his property. He of course was not happy that she had left him standing and waiting at the church on what should have been their wedding day. He felt she had rejected him in the same way his own father had and his own mother had.
Can there ever be hope for these two? He needs her help to cut the ribbon for the opening of a brand new hotel and would she agree to come and do it. The board stated that there had to be a Rocci present at the opening.
Kate Hewitt is a wonderful author. I enjoyed her writing very much and the entire story was suspenseful and fast moving. It really was a true love story between Sierra and Marco. This is one book I know you will enjoy!

5 STAR REVIEW
By thecityofjoy
This is a very good book for instruments and technicians in Instrumentation and Controls field . It provides a theoretical and practical approach to the vast field of instrumentation and controls . This book has 627 pages --- so judge for yourself if this is extensive or not . I have seen books claiming to provide information on Instrumentation that are probably 200 pages thick . This is a great book -- am still reading it -- it is very extensive , very much hands-on and practical and it is published by American Technical Publishers . I would recommend this book to any engineer or technician working in the Instrumentation and Controls field . This book has lots of practical tips and illustrations . In color . I think AMerican Technical Publishing has done a great job of publishing a great book on instrumentation and controls .

Very dry
By Alex
This is a required text for my class. The book is pretty expensive, especially for the quality. I am not too thrilled with this book, as it is very dry and tough to stay focused on.

Good text, bad Kindle implementation
By Seattle Reader
The text is a reasonably good text, on that alone I'd give it 4 or 5 stars. However, the on-line version is extremely difficult to maneuver, but that's on Amazon not on the authors of the textbook. Glad I'm only renting a copy, definitely won't be buying the on-line version. It is only available on Kindle apps, not Kindle devices and Amazon has made it the worst of both worlds. Purchased books perform much better on a Kindle app than does the text. This is my first on-line text so I'm not sure the app is different, but Amazon has a lot of work to do to remove the aggravation of moving around the text or even to make scrolling work. Obviously the developers don't actually use the app.

Very informative
By Sandra
The full title of this book is "Healthy Challenged Skin, The Estheticians' Desk Reference", so of course it's going to be about diseases and disorders and how it affects the skin. It's easy-to-read format is broken down in alphabetical order, telling you what the disease/disorder is, what the symptoms are, and information about what treatments are recommended and what treatments are not advised. Diseases and disorders from Alzheimer's and how clients with this might forget to eat and drink and could therefore be dehydrated, to Diabetes where hot stones in areas like the hands and feet are not advised because diabetics can have nerve damage in those areas, and much, much more. It is very informative and I highly recommend it for every esthetician.

Who Was Adam: A Creation Model Approach to the Origin of Humanity, by Fazale Rana, Hugh Ross

Who was Adam? Was he the result of still ongoing natural processes or a unique creation?

Observations seem to validate at least some aspects of evolutionary theory, but long before Darwin a man named David discerned that there's more to humanity than nature alone can account for.

In the original publication of Who Was Adam? (2005), biochemist Fazale Rana and astronomer Hugh Ross discussed cutting-edge research in junk DNA, the human fossil record, human and chimp genetic similarities, and more. They proposed a new scientifically testable model for human origins.

This robust 10-year update provides rigorous testing of the evolution and creation scenarios. New discoveries in genetics and paleoanthropology, especially, provide helpful evidence. How has RTB's biblically aligned model for human origins fared? Can human evolution be declared a fact? Or does a creation model make more scientific sense?

Groundbreaking Study in Human Origins
By OtherWorlds&Wisdom
Ten years ago, the first edition of this book became one of the most thorough treatments of one of evolution's most serious problems: The origins of man. For decades, evolutionists have tried to piece together nonsensical claims from bone fragments, talk around the genetics that point away from common ancestry between humans and other hominids and so on. Rana and Ross pulled together the science and proposed a new scientific model. The level of science was unheard of in "creationist" circles and the model was something not even design theorists have managed to do. Since 2005, the discoveries and advanced in genetics, fossil finds and related fields has been immense. Anyone who thought little was left to learn were quite surprised at the past decade. This new edition adds those new finds, debates and conclusions. They also analyze where their model was correct, wrong and needed adjustment. They don't fear controversy and rational debate. This sets them apart from many evolutionists and creationists who refuse change no matter the evidence and replace the scientific method with personal philosophy. Truly a top shelf study on human origins, regardless of one's starting point. See also The Cell's Design, Origins of Life and Signature in the Cell.

Worth Reading the Update- Some Questions Remain
By J.W. Wartick
Who Was Adam? by Fazale Rana with Hugh Ross is a major work on human origins from the group Reasons to Believe, an Old-Earth Creationist think-tank. This edition, the 10-Year Update, features over 100 pages of additional material analyzing recent discoveries.

The book is organized in such a way that the first two parts are the original book, while the third part is all new material and analysis. Rana and Ross do an admirable job surveying an immense amount of scientific material related to human origins. They present what they argue is a scientific, creationist model (called the Reasons to Believe model [hereafter referred to as the RTB model]) on human origins. This model includes predictions and testable hypotheses. For example, one of the main predictions is that humans–homo sapiens sapiens–are utterly unique and that their cultural capacity will turn out to be unmatched. Thus, any alleged ancestors of humans will not demonstrate continuity of culture and the like.

They take as confirmation of this prediction the notion that biologists have not managed to put together a solid order in which to place the fossils that are alleged to be human ancestors. Without any such family tree that can be confirmed, the notion that humans evolved, Rana and Ross argue, remains a theory and the question of human evolution is not a fact. They conclude this after having looked at a number of major fossil finds while identifying difficulties with dating them, difficulties with taxonomy and identification, and more.

The updated portion of the book is significant. Those wondering if it is worth getting for this update should know the answer is in the affirmative. There are over 100 additional pages filled with analysis of more recent discoveries and how they impact the RTB model of human origins. To their credit, the authors frankly admit areas in which their predictions were mistaken or their model is challenged. Perhaps the most interesting section is that in which Rana and Ross analyze various behaviors thought to be evidence of early culture among hominids and the like (chapter 23). They show that these behaviors might be anthropomorphism of animal behavior. The chapter on junk DNA shows how scientific discovery has confirmed one of the predictions of the RTB model, and the concluding pair of chapters analyze arguments for and against the RTB model and its viability.

One critique I have is particularly evident in the original work (not in the expanded materials, though), is the occasional use of pure rhetoric to try to make a point. For example, in discussing hominid and homo fossils, Rana and Ross argue that the connections between these fossils has not been established. They therefore conclude that “Without these connections, human evolution cannot be declared a fact but remains a theory” (42). I find this type of wording unfortunate.

Some of the other reasoning behind the RTB model seems possible to go either way (i.e. towards evolutionary theory or the RTB model). For example, Chapter 6 outlines a number of conditions which are to demonstrate humans arrived at the just-right timing for human civilization to flourish–something the RTB model would predict. On the other hand, the authors state the evolutionary model would not necessarily predict this. However, it seems that–from my admittedly limited understanding of biology–the evolutionary model would also predict something similar because life adapts so well that if there was a “just right” circumstance for a type of life, that life would be selected for. Whether this is accurate or not is a different question (and whether I have it right), but it doesn’t seem like this is necessarily evidence for RTB over and against evolution.

The difficulty of evidence that could go either way is one of the biggest difficulties throughout the book. Arguments are often made that because the RTB model allows for a specific piece of evidence, that means that the RTB model is still viable. But there is a difference between confirmation of a model and lack of disconfirmation. It would be more reassuring to have more specific scientific evidence in favor of the model rather than simply being able to be subsumed into it.

At times I also wondered whether certain aspects of the RTB model were necessary for them to defend. For example, the insistence on reading the ages of early humans in the Bible as literal periods in which humans lived for 900+ years. They acknowledge in the expanded section that there has yet to be confirmation of this and that findings so far challenge this idea, yet they continue to hold it as part of the model. I can’t help but think it is a superfluous part that doesn’t actually contribute much to the overall workings of their model.

Who Was Adam? is a significant work worthy of a careful reading by any interested in Christian perspectives on human origins. It provides Christians insight into an Old Earth Creationist perspective on human origins, while also providing enough raw information for readers to draw their own conclusions and formulate their own ideas. It will challenge Christians on their thinking and perhaps force people to re-evaluate their own theories. It is a valuable resource despite having what I see as some difficulties throughout. It is recommended.

The Good

+Frank evaluation of own model after 10 years
+Offers much insight into research of hominids
+Plenty of data means readers can form their own conclusions
+Genuinely valuable update with much new material

The Bad

-Some unfortunate reliance on rhetoric
-Methodological concerns

Adam and Eve existed
By Craig K. Jackson
This is an excellent update of the previous book (same title) published in 2005. Instead of revising the previous book, the authors have added additional chapters in which they discuss new scientific findings and research in the past 10 years.

Their "Creation Model" (emphatically NOT "young-earth creationism") is worthwhile reading for anyone in search of the truth about human origins. It reconciles scientific findings (paleoanthropology, genetic studies of DNA and mtDNA, etc.) with a rational biblical explanation model.
