About the Author
Kari Stenman in undoubtedly the most knowledgeable authority on the Finnish Air Force in World War 2, having written over a dozen books on the subject since the late 1960s. He runs his own publishing company in Finland. Kalevi Keskinnen is an expert on Finnish aviation of World War 2. He works full time as an aviation author and lives in Finland.

The ultimate WWII Finnish fighter color guide.

The best WWII fighter book I've seen. Top notch writing and photos, with outstanding color plates!!!!
You will be please with the information on each aircraft model represented, and the photos of each is just the BEST EVER!!
The technical data on colors is also very good! Great book for the WWII "Finnish" enthusiast and the modeler also.

Finns Fighting Russians

Finlands World War II history is different from that of the rest of the world. The war began for them when they were invaded by the Soviet Union in 1939. This aspect of the war -- called the Winter War in Finland was then followed by the Continuation War when Finland in turn invaded Russia just after the German invasion in 1941.

As a small country, Finland did not build its own aircraft. They purchased a broad range of planes from England, France, Italy, Germany and the United States. And it is really strange to my eyes to see the Brewster Buffalo (B-239 - the export designation) marked with the German Swastika -- Finland as on the German during this part of the war.

The most effective Finish fighters were the French Moranee-Saulnier MS-406 and the American Brewsters. Both of these planes did much better service in Finish service than in French or American use. Part of this was due to modifications made by the Fins -- more horsepower, better guns, perhaps pilots that were somewhat more desperate.

This books title says that it is on the colors of the Finnish fighters, and to an extent that is true. But it also has a lot of information about the planes and their use against the Russians. The Russian planes they were fighting often turned out to be British Hurricanes or American Aircobras or Tomahawks.

I wish I could have given this more than five stars, @&%$! it! The colored illustrations were large and easy on the eyes while showing the subtle variances from plane to plane of the overmatched Finns. I have ordered the rest of this series based on my enthusiasm for this first of the lot.

Good read

Taming the Italian Bad Boy is part of the International Bad Boys from Tule Publishing. Joanne Walsh has written an enjoyable look at an Italian Peter Pan entrepreneur and ugly duckling. I guess, I just mixed folktales right there. Still he is just what Lucy needs. Too many hurts have caused her to lose confidence, unable to see her beauty or her strengths.

This is a light flirty short read with a predictable outcome. However, who does love to see the duckling rise to their true self. So like a flower, Lucy blooms when she takes a chance on Danilo. For his part, it was time for Danilo to grow up.

Taming the Italian Bad Boy by Joanne Walsh, a great addition to he International Bad Boy series. I enjoyed the setting. I couldn't put the book down from he first page and I wanted more at the end. I loved the characters especially Lucy and Danilo. I would recommend this series to anyone who likes alittle spice in their romance stories. Looking forward to reading more by Joanne Walsh

When love is all you need to tame the bad boy!

This is proving to be a fantastic series and this is a great addition to it! Joanne Walsh has continued the wonderful writing by her fellow authors of books in the International Bad Boy Series to produce her own novel starring the wealthy Italian entrepreneur, lemon grower and Limoncello maker, Danilo Spinozzi. He’s a strong alpha male, used to loving and leaving as he wishes with little or no thought to the women he’s finishing with. He knows things are going to be different from the start when he first meets Lucy Luxton after swerving his motorbike and falling into a ditch in an otherwise successful attempt to avoid hitting her cat! She’s his antithesis in so many ways - she is shy, quiet, sweet, kind, considerate and totally unaware of her own beauty. She’s about to go to Ravello on the Amalfi Coast to study designing and making jewellery . . . . you guessed it, that’s where he lives! When her Nana advises Lucy to “take a wee risk” you just know you’re in for a great romance!

This is an excellently written novel with strong, well defined characters who grow and develop throughout the story. Whilst their attraction is explosive, their wariness is explained as past experiences of both main characters are revealed making it easy to understand the emotional impact on them as adults and on their current relationship. The growth of trust, understanding and love through the story is portrayed brilliantly, ensuring readers are able to empathise with the characters and their reactions. This doesn’t just apply to the central couple but to some of the secondary characters, too. I particularly appreciated how Danilo and Lucy were shown to bring out the best in each other, revealing aspects of their personality that others had never noticed. The path of true love does not run smoothly but has plenty of obstacles and ‘flies in the ointment’ to get in the way of them achieving their HEA. How these are viewed and overcome are what make this into a great story.

If you enjoy your romances to have strong characters revealing hidden weaknesses and shy females proving themselves resilient and strong, this is a great book for you to read and I recommend you go get yourself a copy to escape into asap!

He began his career in Los Angeles, CA as a Scheduling Engineer, earning his LEED AP credential along the way in 2008. Amazing..wait..no just good.

Okay, so I wanted to write a GREAT review for those who plan to take the LEED green associate exam, and are looking for a great study guide.
This is what this book is. HOWEVER, I think its important to let you know a few things if you wanted to purchase this (and that I wish I had known before buying it):
1. There's lots of typos. If a published book has this many, it needs to be revised.
2. While Koralturk explains sustainable ideas in a very comprehensive and simple way, some of the names he used for certain credits within the credit categories are not the ones LEED uses. It can get very confusing.
3. Some of the information does not seem relevant at first, but the point is that it all ties together, the more background information you know, it's easier to make connections and see the big picture.

Overall, the author's simple explanations helped me pass this test. It was very interesting and his terminology and examples were very easy to follow (at least for me, college student who has never been on a LEED project, or a project at all) and I would purchase again. Gave it 3 stars because no published book should have so many errors, and because he should be consistent with LEED's terminology.

Also, he has charts and a glossary at the end of the book that were very important when studying. And the index included helped A LOT when reviewing. It was awesome!

Great Book, Lots of Information

This book is very good. It contains a lot of information on the LEED process, the credits and importantly the integrative strategies for LEED building design. The book is well written and lays information out in a clear and concise manner. All important information is highlighted in bold fonts and it's easy to look up later on. He even includes a glossary of important terms in the back of the book along with other important appendices. This is probably the greatest LEED Green Associate book out there. All others just seem way to thin and/or poorly written and put together. It's not even boring to read either due to how it's laid out which is really saying something.

If you are new to the LEED V4 rating system or LEED in general and you are interested in learning about it then this is certainly a good book. Or even if you want to use it to take the exam it's good for that too. Highly recommended compared to other books. He uses good language and examples to casually explain items no one would know about like open grid pavement systems, dry ponds and bioswales. I was shocked of how much information is included and how well it was written.

This was the primary book I used to study for the LEED Green Associate/AP BD+C exam and I passed, the first time. I used this book along with some practice questions found online. So, it's definitely worth looking at especially for the price.

For people who are interested in advanced skill development

This is a great reference for people with previous Martial Arts skills. I like the explanation of medical complications, which can occur from the result of one's use of the described techniques. The book doesn't only teach you what damage can be done, but it also explains what could medically occur in the Best and the Worst case scenario. If you don't have any Martial Arts training, this book may not be for you, but with any skills this is a great reading material to further your Martial Arts knowledge. I didn't like the moves demonstrated in the case of attack and defense. Even though, they might be helpful, they are not always the best moves and might be misleading to the reader, but overall the book is amazing and definitely worth reading.

Pathetic

This doesn't have much deadly karate but it certainly does blow...

What a huge disappointment! This premise holds much promise but the breadth and depth of this particular rendering is very shallow indeed. It's only 117 pages and mostly pictures. The illustrations unfortunately are marginally well done and the photos have very bad contrast so between these two shortcomings the techniques are not well illuminated. Since the text is not very descriptive either, the total package is very incomplete for the few applications they actually cover. There are hundreds of traditional karate techniques that are not covered at all.

I have no idea why the practitioners in the photos have their shirts off. It is not helpful in showing what they are doing technique-wise. Neither model has much physique to speak of so I can't imagine they're trying to show off what great shape they are in. You'd think a book about karate would at least show folks wearing traditional karate uniforms yet only one of the two has gi-style pants (with no obi) while the other wears half a tracksuit. Both wear shoes. Since they are not really doing karate techniques in every case, I guess this is irrelevant but I do find it annoying.

As mentioned previoiusly, there are a huge number of techniques not discussed at all (such as locks or chokes along with several types of strikes). Furthermore, many that are discussed have significant errors. For example, when it comes to an eye strike the author shows fingertip rakes across and into the eye describing the effects as a collapsed "bulb of the eye" or a lacerated eyelid. That's okay so far as it goes, I suppose, but a "torn eyelid from the effect of a sharp finger nail piercing an eyelid that has blinked at the last instant before it has struck" is sheer nonsense and not truly a medical implication. I don't remember reading the term "bulb of the eye" in any medical textbooks either, come to think of it.

In real life, the most common eye attack is a rake. The second most common is a gouge. The gouge is almost never successfully performed with the fingers. Instead, it is performed with the thumb while the fingers contour the side of the head, which is why that version is the most common bunkai. It works best when the opponent's head is supported against the ground, a wall, or with your other hand. When you do that the eyeball is displaced and popped out rather than collapsed or crushed. The book not only does not talk about displacements at all, but it also focuses on ruptures, something that is virtually impossible to do with an unsupported finger jab as shown in the text.

I really don't know why the set-ups for the various techniques were chosen in the way they were. For example, the groin strike shows the defender caught in a two handed choke with the attacker's thumbs pressing into his throat before the counterattack. Get real! You'll never be "caught" in a two handed front choke. Unless you are completely oblivious no one is going to walk up and choke you, at least not upright when you are both standing. Perhaps you'd slap the attacker's hands aside and react with a groin kick when he tries to choke you but that's about it. I've witnessed, interceded in, stopped, or prevented more than 300 real-life fights and I've never seen anyone trying this silliness on the street let alone successfully applying it. Chokes require significant disruption before you can successfully apply them. Oh, and the author doesn't even describe the medical implications of chokes either... lame, lame, lame. Speaking of lame, the eight pages on "principles of first aid and pain reduction" appear to be a last minute filler. I was expecting first aid for each technique shown but it is just some general first aid 101 stuff.

All in all I'm hugely disappointed in this book. This is a great topic and I'd really like to see someone with a medical degree do it well. The execution in this book, unfortunately, isn't at all what I was looking for. It is a pathetic, misguided attempt to cover an important topic.

Optimistic?

Brian Adams takes far too optimistic a stance on the medical aspect of martial arts.
Deadly Karate Blows assumes a knowledgeable role, describing the horrific results of a well-placed strike; however, with the way Adams set it out, it would appear that this is what happens EVERY time a blow is landed in real combat. He fails to explicate how it is that blows landed in this manner during sparring sessions do not involve these violent conditions, yet in street fighting, all of a sudden one's victim is prone to all manner of post-trauma malady. While Adams had done his research, and cites an impressive array of sources, he does not seem to grasp that many of these effects require a great amount of strength, and very specific conditions to reach. These "medical implications" may be plausible in isolated situations, but it is not feasible to suggest that it is the probability.
Granted, softer targets will more frequently yield the described results, but harder targets (the shin, ribs,et cetera) are much less susceptible to trauma. Again, these areas require more than normal force, and very specific conditions; a kick to the shin with the side of the foot will not "easily fracture one or both bones." Fortunately, he does seem to realize that the clothing worn plays a role: a hard-soled shoe will do more damage than a bare foot.
My last disappointment with this book was evident from the start: he is redundant to the point of nausea. He feels it necessary to repeat almost everything he says; this does not strengthen his point, it only makes people tired of hearing it.
Overall, do not purchase this book if you wish to become a deadly opponent. It is good, I think, in the medical respect, and it offers some insight into biomechanics, but the approach is not strong enough to merit real interest to a martial artist.

Well written and illustrated and throughly engrossing

Comparing the title of this interesting and well-produced book to its actual content, it's unclear what the author intended and it's not really what I had expected. Still, if your interest is in domestic life and architecture in 19th century Britain (and mine is, among other subjects), there's a lot of good stuff here, both textually and visually. Drawn by the fact that Mark Girouard provided its introductory essay, I had thought to find a social history of the Victorian-era family, a study of the people and their surroundings, but that's not entirely true. Instead of a synthesis, this is sort of an anthology of twenty or so discrete pictorial essays, each devoted to a particular establishment, the heydays of which are spread over the century. The author, who is an artist married to an architect, begins with John Harden, a Regency gentleman and amateur artist who produced a number of watercolors of his family and the rented home they all shared in the Lake District. His informal paintings record the daily life and activities of a group of genteel but not wealthy people in the period just before Victoria came to the throne. These range from the mistress of the house playing the pianoforte to a scullery maid preparing meals in the kitchen. Moreover, his wife kept a series of journals in the form of long letters written to her sister in India. The accompanying text does a good job of describing what the reader is looking at and what it all means, from the family's musical interests to the scheduling of mealtimes.

Another chapter considers domestic life from a far different perspective: The search by the young Queen for a part-time home less formal and more relaxed than Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle. She found it, more or less, at Claremont and then at Osborne. Victoria being who she was, and a palace being what is, the art here is much more formal and archival in perspective and the records quoted from are more official. (A later chapter does something similar for the Prince of Wales at Marlborough House.)

The subjects of other essays range from George Scharf, a bachelor and professional man of wide talents, whose artistic record of life in London and in his own cluttered apartment have been "rediscovered" in the past couple of decades, to the home of Pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones, caught in watercolors and photos from the 1890s. Some of the chapters are quite short, only a page or two, and might better have been collected into a couple of longer, more thematic chapters, but that's a quibble. Girouard's opening essay concentrates on providing an overview of the whole range of chapters that follow it and brings in a number of his enduring themes, which you will find developed at greater length in his own later books -- all of which are worth finding and reading. There's also a lengthy and very detailed bibliography to jump-start further research.

About the Author

Linda S. Fazio received the 1999 Occupational Therapy Association of California Award of Excellence for significant contributions to occupational therapy. She holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration, Student Services and Counseling from the University of North Texas as well as an MS in Anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a BS in Occupational Therapy from Texas Woman's University. She consults widely on occupational therapy academic curriculum development, curriculum design, and community program design and development.

Catriona Jennings is a cardiac specialist nurse and the European Research Nurse coordinator for EUROACTION and EUROASPIRE III in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London.

Ian Graham qualified in medicine at Trinity College, Dublin. He trained in the Adelaide and St. Vincent's Hospitals in Dublin, and at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge, England. He held the post of MRC Research Fellow and, later, Director of Research at St. Vincent's Hospital and was also Director of Research at the Irish Heart Foundation. He is past president of the Irish Heart Foundation, the Irish Hyperlipidaemia Association, and of the Dublin University Biological Association. He also founded the Irish Cardiac Surgery Register.
Awards and distinctions have included a Medical Research Council Fellowship, an ISFC Cardiovascular Epidemiology Fellowship, the first Stokes Lectureship in Dublin and an EU Travelling Fellowship at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, and Fellowships of the European Society of Cardiology and of the American College of Chest Physicians. He is an honorary Fellow of Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland.


Stephan Gielen is an Associate Professor, Head of the Heart Failure Programme and an interventional cardiologist at the Heart Centre of the University of Leipzig. He is President-elect of the European Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation, Speaker of the Working Group of Preventive Cardiology of the German Society of Cardiology, and Vice Speaker of the Working Group on Cardiac Diseases in the Elderly. After his medical education at the University of Bochum, Germany, Harvard Medical School, Boston, and Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, USA, he started his internship at Heidelberg University before moving to Leipzig in 1997.
