Very interesting story. Although there is doubt that the fairy photos are authentic, the story about the English girls Frances and Elsie, who claimed to have seen the fairies is true and involved investigation by then current celebrities Harry Houdini(legendary magician) and Arthur Connan Doyle (Sherlock Holmes author). There is also a charming Warner Brothers film about the whole episode. The film is on DVD and is called, "Fairy Tale - A True Story" 1998.

This is but one of the great publications from Mr Gardner. There is more in the world that we do not see due to our finite vision. England is one of the last bastions of the visible elementals that work on the earth according to their designations of Mother God. It is but more proof that just because we do not see with our physical eyes does not mean its not there.

Fergusson Wright Hume, known as Fergus Hume (8 July 1859 – 12 July 1932) was a prolific English novelist. Finding that the novels of �mile Gaboriau were then very popular in Melbourne, he obtained and read a set of them and determined to write a novel of a similar kind. The result was the self-published novel The Mystery of a Hansom Cab (1886), which became a great success. Hume based his descriptions of poor urban life on his knowledge of Little Bourke Street. He sold the English and United States rights to the novel for 50 pounds, and thus derived little benefit from its success. It eventually became the best selling mystery novel of the Victorian era, author John Sutherland terming it the "most sensationally popular crime and detective novel of the century".This novel inspired Arthur Conan Doyle to write A Study in Scarlet, which introduced the character Sherlock Holmes. Doyle remarked, "Hansom Cab was a slight tale, mostly sold by 'puffing'." After the success of his first novel and the publication of another, Professor Brankel's Secret (c.1886), Hume returned to England in 1888. He resided in London for few years and then he moved to the Essex countryside where he lived in Thundersley for 30 years, eventually producing more than 100 novels and short stories. He continued to be anxious for success as a dramatist, and at one time Henry Irving was favourably considering one of his plays, but he died before it could be produced.

About the Author
Fergus Hume was born in England in 1859. He grew up in New Zealand where he became a lawyer. In 1885 he emigrated to Melbourne, the city in which he wrote and set The Mystery of A Hansom Cab. In 1888 he settled in England and embarked on a literary career which produced over 130 novels. He died in 1932.

Good mystery containing many plot twists

Good mystery about a "locked door" murder of a man in a house thought to be haunted. What first appears to be an easy to solve murder turns into many plot twists filled with secret identities. At one point or another, I thought that each character in the story could be the murderer. Recommended.

A haunted house, a murder & a plethora of suspicious characters

The setting is dull, respectable Pimlico. Our hero is Lucian Denzil, a handsome young barrister living modestly but comfortably in a boarding house. When an old man is murdered in the sinister haunted house across the street, Lucian gets involved through sheer curiosity in investigating the case. He has better luck than the official detective, probably because he's got a great motivation. He's fallen in love with the daughter of the victim, and if he manages to find the murderer, she may smile on him.

The plot is heavily peopled with suspicious characters: the frivolous young widow of the murdered man, who shows a lively interest in the insurance money; a suble Italian count who seems all too fond of the widow; the suspicious lodger in the house in back of the haunted house who disappears just after the murder; a monkey-like doctor who owns an insane asylum and has a strange friendship with the count; and the clever red-headed gypsy servant girl who seems to know something about something.

One by one the suspects keep demonstrating their innocence and frustrating Lucian's efforts. The identity of the murderer, finally, took me by surprise.

The fun of this mystery revolves around the many plot twists. The characters are not all that deep, but they have a vintage charm. I liked Lucien's spinster landlady, for example, who's hopelessly enamored with his youth and good looks. The frivolous young widow is fun, too, with her cartoonish American accent.

If you're interested in minor works of Edwardian detective fiction, as I am, I think you might enjoy The Silent House. It was first published in 1907.

The author's command of the English language is good. I like the period most of his books were written. These stories weren't his best, but not bad.

Really liked the book. Gave an insight into Paul's upbringing and how it influenced him. Also discussed the culture in the cities he traveled through which helped me to understand the environment he was in. Explained his writings in chronological order and how they built on his previous writings. Also how they related to where he was in his travels interactions with governments and criticizers.

An excellent, clear introduction to research methods

This book is a very well-written introduction to methods in psychological research. Goodwin's style is friendly and often humorous. The information he provides is interspersed with case studies, historical antecdotes, and other "real-world" examples of research principles being put into practice. I found the reading to go extremely fast and painlessly.
Goodwin covers such topics as the goals of scientific research, types of experimental research, the fundamentals of experimental design, ethics, subject sampling, types of measurement, assessing validity, and analysis of results. He does not go into great detail about statistics or computational analysis, as this is really meant to be a general introduction to methodology of designing research experiments.

Each chapter begins with an overview, so you have a sense of what to expect ahead. He also provides study questions at the end of every chapter which are very helpful to work through. They are in various forms: multiple choice, short answers, essays, etc. so you can practice describing the topics to be sure you understand the material. There is also a study guide published for this textbook, which I would recommend getting if only for additional practice.
Having a thorough grasp of research methods is critical for any student of psychology, and this book is probably required for many methods classes in universities. Luckily, it's a great textbook to use and makes research methodology interesting and enjoyable.

Lots of Phony, Inflated Reviews On This Book!

This book is 42 pages long, but most of it is page filler and stories the author tells. Some information is helpful, but nothing new and nothing that common sense wouldn't tell you anyway. (Just be polite, don't rile the cop, don't let the cop cause you to lose your cool....etc., etc.) If you are someone that needs to be reminded of these kinds of things, then you might like this book. Also, if you are hoping that this book will keep a cop from giving you a ticket, you might get a very slight edge by acting reasonable, but don't hold your breath!

Don't be fooled! I notice a lot of reviews here that are ecstatic 5 stars posts, and appear to just happen to be all about the same couple of days...so these must be friends of the author or fan club members. This is not helpful to a fair evaluation. Frankly I think I'm being generous in giving the book 1 star as it is almost only a ZERO star book.

(It is important to note that more than half of the reviewers posting 4 and 5 star reviews have published only 1 review on Amazon. Yes you guessed it...a review of this book and no others. Wonder why they suddenly decided to review this book out of all the millions of books on Amazon? We know exactly why! These inflated reviews and this author should be banned from Amazon, and this should not ne allowed to continue.)

My suggestion is you check for the same material which is available on any major search engine for free, then decide if you think you want to buy the book.

He is short and to the point and I highly recommend his book

I have read most of Mr. Luna's books over the years. His writing style is straightforward and he researches subject topics very through. I told the advice he provided on handling the police will definitely help me with my anxiety if I were to be pulled over. Getting pulled over can be hazardous to your life if you don't follow his advice. He is short and to the point and I highly recommend his book!

Well-written spanking fantasy

Pendragon’s Lash is a gem in the spanking fiction genre. It has a solid plot, hot spankings that flow out of the plot (they are not gratuitous), and sympathetic characters. The writing is excellent. If you enjoy spanking fiction, add this one to your list.

Pendragon "pen'ned by a pro

I'm not really comfortable with this 5-star rating, but I'm sticking with it because I don't have a choice. If I had one, I'd make it at least a 6, with flashing lights and bells ringing.
I stumbled across Rollin Hand's work several months ago and immediately set out on a quest to read everything he had written. His newest book, "Pendragon's Lash," belongs at the top of the list of good reads in romantic spanking fiction and is his best. That's saying something, given his reputation for exceeding his fans' expectations.
I particularly like the author's skillful plan to "blend" the stories of four futuristic visitors to an ancient Renaissance-type kingdom, where traditional gender roles are the order of the day, and failure to meet the standards results in immediate attention focused on the seat of the problem. Since Pendragon's "guests" hail from a different time and place, with very different concepts of gender equality and discipline, there is bound to be a steep learning curve in play.
Rollin Hand makes it all work so that fans looking for spanking action will light up with glee, pure romance fans will fall in love with his characters and their star-crossed adventures, and fans of good fiction who simply delight in a great story, well written, will hope he writes a sequel very soon.
Buy it now, so you can look forward to dipping into it once the holidays are over and the gloom of January sets in. You'll be very glad you did.

Fantastic!

I highly recommend this book. The plotting was exceptionally well done and intriguing. The characters were believable and easy to identify with. The setting was imaginative and interesting. Rollin's writing skills are solid---active, descriptive prose that do not trip over themselves.
And between all these great attributes, Rollin Hand managed to deliver smoking hot romance with a healthy dose of spankings in a variety of scenarios----ALL of which enhanced this tail, er, tale.

Bravo. Well done. I will definitely be reading more of Rollin's work.

Best Computer History Book I Have Read

Ted Nelson does it again. Through his lifelong passion to find ways to express himself he has lead the way to many ideas that became the World Wide Web, and indeed went much further. In fact we are starting to run into the problems with the Web that he was trying to solve decades ago: business models, lack of history of changes, lack of automatic attribution, etc.

In this book he gives us a new way to look at the history of computing that is different from those that feel like a text book of inevitability. Rather this history one shaped by personalities, foibles, and commercial influences. This history is engaging because beyond being accurate, it shows how the next generation can bend these technology to their own personalities, foibles, and commercial influences. In this book, history does not unfold, it is built.

While the book design is not of modern standard, this should be overlooked for the clarity and freshness of message and method.

I recommend this book to anyone trying to ignite the spark of inventiveness in yourself, your students, or a friend.

A Huge Disappointment

Let me say up front that Ted Nelson has been one of the most original thinkers in the field of computing over the past fifty years, and I respect his attempts to articulate his vision even though he has never been able to put it into practice. I highly recommend getting your hands on a copy of Literary Machines or Computer Lib/Dream Machines. It's a shame that these books are out of print.

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this book. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that it's embarrassingly bad. If you had told me that it was put together by a high school student who pasted together scraps from Wikipedia, I'd have believed you. It's not just badly written; it's sloppy.

It's true that some of Nelson's unique perspective colors his account of computing history, but I doubt that the reader unfamiliar with his other work would come away with much of an understanding of why some of us find his ideas exciting. Meanwhile, as history, Geeks Bearing Gifts is virtually useless.

I wish that Nelson had put his energy into a first-hand account of his experiences instead of this shoddy attempt to (re)write history. That would have been an original contribution and probably also quite entertaining. Geeks Bearing Gifts is neither.

Covers a lot

Covering the whole range of StudioLive mixers packs this manual with more info than any one user needs, but it isn't too hard to find the right pieces. Even so, I wish it could have been produced in separate editions focused on individual models.

I bought this book because it was sold as a book for all of the Studiolive mixers, however I was disappointed that my mixer the 16.0.2 was not given as extensive instruction as the larger mixers. If you have the Presonus AI it is probably worth getting.

Outstanding book, Bobby does it again!! This book takes you well beyond the PreSonus StudioLive manual. It's very well written and gives you actual real life scenarios on how to use this great piece of gear. He explains every section of the mixer in great detail, but doesn't stop there. He goes on to show you how to set it up and use it for live, or in the studio; with in depth explanations. You'll see that the setup for live is completely different than studio usage and he shows you exactly how to use it for both with examples. Overall a must have book if you own a PreSonus StudioLive or StudioLiveAI!!!

Great book for students!

I am a Doctor of Pharmacy student currently on my Infectious Diseases rotation in the final year of my curriculum. I loved the idea of this book and purchased it through the Nerdcore Medical kickstarter as soon as I discovered it. Infectious Disease diagnosis, pathology, and pharmacotherapy is a fascinating field that is often challenging for many students. I am not really into fantasy gaming and stories, but this book is dense with accurate information and it's styling definitely helped me as a mnemonic to build my memorization of antibiotic spectra and coverage. This book and the other games and products from Nerdcore Medical were definitely more helpful to me as a memory aid than the other comparables I have tried like SketchyMicro, Made Ridiculously Simple series, etc. In summary, I love this book!

If this were one of a series (and I wish it were), I'd buy the whole series right now.

I'm a DVM, not an MD, and I've never been into fantasy gaming but I love this book more than words can describe. The illustrations are beautiful, and the concepts and descriptions are so clever that I get at least one delighted giggle from each page. I've also learned some really interesting new facts, such as the story of Balto the sled-dog (I am a veterinarian after all;), which I looked up after being intrigued by the reference to him in the description of C. diphtheriae. This book would make a wonderful and unique gift for anyone in the medical sciences. I just bought another copy as a gift for my boss.
