Awesome, definite must read!

Seeds of Discovery is an amazing YA Novel that instantly drags you in with the mystery and suspense elements right from the beginning. I have yet to find a more artfully written novel that combines mystery with fantasy in my years of reading.

I never know what to expect from independent authors who are not represented by the large publishers. I came upon this book by accident, through contact with the author on a blogging site. When I sat down to read, my mind was a blank slate, trying to have no expectations whatsoever. What I discovered in this novel was beyond anything I could have imagined. Those of you who know me know how much I love a good fantasy story, but this one just put me over the top in my love for the genre.

Quinn is a girl who pretty much any teenage girl could relate to, and you are instantly drawn to her. But Quinn cannot leave a mystery unsolved and, in trying to figure out what secret William is hiding, she gets sucked into an adventure she could never have imagined in her wildest dreams. In a way, it is also a journey of self discovery, though that is not the obvious element of the story.

Quinn finds herself in a whole new world that she never knew existed, a whole new plane of existence, if you will. When she finally gets life to return to "normal," she finds herself torn between the boy she has known all of her life, and a group of strangers that, in the time frame of the "real world" she has only known for a day or so.

Overall, this was a very enjoyable read that I could not walk away from, and I found myself staying up late and foregoing sleep just to get to the end and find out what was going to happen next, only to realize that there are two more books, which I cannot wait to read. I would strongly encourage any fan of YA/Fantasy Fiction to pick this one up. It is a must read!

Wonderful story! Wonderful characters! Wonderful CLEAN read!

This book is great for all ages. Finally a SAFE and CLEAN read for our young people! I enjoyed it a great deal, and ended up buying every book in the series, all of which were equally good reads! I can't wait for the next book! Breeana Puttroff has a great fan site as well, and interacts with her fans through facebook. Good clean fun!

A good book to curl with and spend some hours of relaxed reading.

What I liked about it:
the book starts off like a typical YA novel-high school, popular guys, not-so popular girl- but then it surprises you.
how sensible the female lead was.
it was the perfect length.
ended at just the right place.

What I didn't like about it:
lack of details-I never thought I'd been the way to notice that! The flora & fauna unique to the kingdom were not described in too much detail.

A good book to curl up with and spend some hours of relaxed reading.

Important and Influential

Besides taking a revolutionary look at theology ("all theology is practical"), Browning shows very clearly that the embarrassed silence that has fallen between ministers and scholars is unreasonable. The four movements of practical theology drive home the deficiencies of theory-to-practice models, while the five dimensions of practical reasoning and moral thinking underscore that this way of viewing things belongs to the philosopher as much to the pastor.

Didier Anzieu is Vice President of the Psychoanalytic Association of France and Emeritus Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Paris X-Nanterre. He is the author of several books published in English translation. These include Freud's Self Analysis, The Group and the Unconscious and The Skin Ego. He has also edited and contributed to Psychic Envelopes, a collection of papers which further develops the "Skin Ego" concept.

Naomi Segal is Professorial Fellow in French and German Studies at Birkbeck, University of London.

Rejecting the Freudian notion that music is a form of infantile escapism, British psychologist Storr ( Solitude ) argues that music originates from the human brain, promotes order within the mind, exalts life and gives it meaning. In an engaging inquiry, Storr speculates on music's origins in preliterate societies and examines its therapeutic powers, even in people with neurological diseases that cause movement disorders. Focusing on Western classical music from Bach to Stravinsky, he rejects the view, expounded by Leonard Bernstein and others, that the Western tonal system is a universal scheme rooted in the natural order. Citing studies of physiological arousal, Storr updates Arthur Schopenhauer's thesis that music portrays the inner flow of life more directly than the other arts. Lots of surprises in Storr - dissonance resolved

Coming from a social and psychological perspective, for me Storr's opening insight in this book begins with a discussion of the social origins of music and the place music had in specific cultures. Citing, as an example, Australian Aboriginals, he notes that music was used to store and pass on knowledge that was critical to survival. He notes that early music also served a collective function where music expressed 'the structure of their knowledge and social relations' (19). As well music served as a form of shared identification - they're playing our song - themes, anthems, war crys and so on. From the outset Storr draws on a diversity of material to make his point and the illustrations used in this opening chapter evidence the work that has gone into writing this book. It is also this detail that is such a delight for the reader to take in and it is really difficult to rely the pleasantness of this red without recounting each and all of the stories he recounts. And as such why for me this is a difficult review to write in a manner that captures what Storr offers here.

In Ch 2 Storr begins to unpack his central theme - we can all have physical and emotional responses to music and while we may share similar responses, one person may not necessarily respond to a piece of music exactly the same as another or indeed respond to the same piece in the same way at different times in life. Our methods of perception (left/right brain alone) may mean that we take from music something that another does not. He also notes the capacity for some to empathise with a piece music while others focus on its structure and form. Similarly, a capacity to appreciate music doesn't necessarily translate into a talent for performing music. Music he notes, plays a variety of roles in health care and interestingly, the brain can process music or song in differing ways pre and post injury.

Ch 3 is a tough read but he draws forth some important insights. First that music is deeply embedded in culture. The creation of specific works of music draw deeply from that culture and are unique to it. Here he draws attention to the variety of musical scales that exist and which may be unique to a given culture. He suggests that one may learn the music of another culture, just as one can learn their language, but few will be deeply grasp that which is not culturally theirs. In this chapter his also introduces another key thematic, that of the cultural imperialism of the westernised form of music, noting some perceptions of it as though it were the only true musical form.

In Ch 4 he explores the idea that music in itself can express ideas without words. But at the same time poses the idea that what the composer wrote in the music, their ideas and insights may be set in a given time and space, and as such others may never perceive in the music what the composer intended. Again here he brings forth his insight about the cultural centricity or groundedness of compositions and the capacity of the listener of such creations to ever get what the other was on about. One cannot just know a composer because you have studied their music (121). Here and else where (e.g. page 129) Storr brings forth a social constructionist theme, questioning our capacity to grasp a thing in itself as distinct to our interpretation of phenomenon as they seem to us.

In the ensuing chapters he takes up some more psychological themes. In Ch 5 he considers music thru the question as to whether it is an escape from reality. I am no fan of Freud and as such I found parts of this chapter overly analytical - sometimes an ink blot is just an ink blot Sigmund! Music does though, have the capacity to take us to another 'mental space' and give life satisfaction - a thematic that he draws forward now until the end of the book, noting in the end that like Neitzsche music has been 'something for the sake of which it is worthwhile to live on earth' (188). Music can be a source of comfort for those who find themselves alone, but do not wish to be so (111). Music can also be a source of solace in an otherwise alienating world (121).

Ch 7 & 8 get to the heart of the question for me, the place of music in the realisation of the self - the finding and expressing of meaning in life. Here the breadth and deep of discussion, encompassing Jung, Plato and Schopenhauer (among others) is exhilarating. The experience of the aesthetic, the contemplation of beauty, abstraction, knowing ourselves, personal striving and the will to power, the satisfaction of desire and dealing with the internal hunger, the craving that the death of God means for individuals, in this case Jung and Neitzsche, something that many of us can identify with. And what is this striving about but: "becoming what one is (as) a creative act comparable with creating a work of art" (153). But it is not gooey art - it is art that embraces the fullness of life as tragedy wherein "we have moved beyond mere enjoyment of music to a condition in which we are saying yes to life as it actually is: tragic, ecstatic, painful and joyful - following Neitzche, music and art make sense of the world and justifies existence' (158).

I enjoyed this book and it is one that I will read again. I can't recall what I thought I would find in this book but I was surprised and delighted by the breadth and depth of the lenses thru which he considered not just music but life as well. From his early discussions of the role of hearing in the develop of emotion thru to the difficult questions of finding meaning and satisfaction in a "tragic" world, Storr takes one on a journey. And thru his Jungian lens, he suggests that there is a sense of wholeness, of balance to be found on this journey. And when one has music in mind, I think he is saying that it is as much as what we bring to music in our yearnings, expectations, or current realities, at a given time and place in our lives, as it is as about what we take away from it that makes music so very personal. Storr recognises that music can engage us physically, emotionally, economically, environmentally, psychologically, socially, in solitude as well as isolation and spirituality. Music can meet us at the intersection of multiple perspectives and combined life experiences. For sure we can all respond to a given piece of music at some level of shared experience but fundamentally music will speak to us as who each of us is at a given moment in our life journey. Thru these multiple pathways music speaks not just to us and thru us, but also thru the expression of and/or the creation of music we too can have a say, we can express what we need to share with a wider world and we too can be a part of the creation of beauty and of the every day. Very good book, very bad index

I had to switch from Subversion to Git practically overnight. After doing some purchases (from Amazon, of course), the conclusion is that this is the best Git book on the market. Very clear; covers not only "how to do this" but also "why to do this this way" and "is there any other way of doing this". Covers all GitHub and BitBucket machinery. Very detailed List of Content, listing all use cases discussed in the book

Why 3 stars only? Well, VERY BAD INDEX. There is no way to find the reference to specific command. When I wanted to find how works and what for is "reset" command, I had to browse half of the book.. Unfortunately, this substantially reduces the usefulness of the book.

Anyway, despite of all problems, book is highly recommended

An introduction to Git through problem-solution example.

I honestly expected something different. I’m somehow disappointed, but not with the author. Rather, with my expectations. The title is certainly misleading. When I first read it, I was expecting something similar to a cookbook, a collection of problems and solutions that assumes that you know already the basics and gets you through the challenges you are likely to face on a daily basis.

I was wrong.

This is instead an introduction to Git disguised as a cookbook like title. The author gets beginners into the magic world of Git in 13 chapters. And, well, he does it pretty much well. He starts with the usual how to install Git chapter, which the most of us just skip, and then goes on to crucial topics like rebasing (chapter 7, which I have particularly loved).

Each subject comes with step by step guides, which are extremely important in a beginner’s guide. Moreover, and this is the coolest, the examples come with many graphs and images, showing the initial, current and expected statuses and how things change while we move through the steps. Really good.

On the other hand, the author uses a massive amount of aliases. This feels wrong. In an introductory guide you wanna see the commands over and over. An alias makes your life easier, but now when you learn.

So, I would suggest this book to anyone new to Git. Intermediate users and gurus won’t find anything useful though.

Another really great read by Hinduja and Patchin. Cyerbullying Prevention and Response: Expert
Perspectives is a collection works from of some of the most knowledgeable experts in the field of cyberbullying. I enjoyed how the book ranged from explanations of cyberbullying, to how it impacts our youth, and finishing with how we can try to help stop cyberbullying with implementation. While I felt some parts of this book was more difficult to read than their other books, because some of the experts' information was a little too technical for me, the compilation of several author's views on various aspects of cyberbullying was interesting to read and informative. This is a definite must read for anyone studying the topic of cyberbullying.

About the Author

Catherine L. Ruscitti, PsyD, earned her doctor of psychology degree in clinical psychology from Loyola University Maryland. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at Baylor College of Medicine, Menninger Department of Behavioral Sciences on the Adolescent/Adult Track at The Menninger Clinic in Houston, Texas. Ruscitti is currently a post-doctoral fellow on the Compass Unit for Young Adults at The Menninger Clinic where she provides psychotherapy and assessment services to young adult inpatients. She is also continuing her research at The Menninger Clinic examining emotion regulation difficulties in inpatients with eating disorders and participating in an eating disorder research team. She is interested in pursuing a career in adolescent and adult psychotherapy and assessment at an inpatient psychiatric hospital, with particular interest in the treatment of eating disorders, mood disorders, anxiety, and personality disorders.

Jeffrey E. Barnett, PsyD, ABPP, is associate dean for graduate programs and the social sciences, and a professor in the department of psychology, at Loyola University Maryland and a licensed psychologist in independent practice in Baltimore, Maryland. He has given over 200 presentations and workshops for mental health professionals and has over 200 publications in print and online. Jeffrey Barnett has published nine books thus far, one of which is in its second edition and one of which is in its seventh edition. He is widely published in ethics and professional practice issues for mental health professionals with many of his books being written broadly for all mental health professionals, not just psychologists. Additionally, he has received numerous professional awards on the national level and has presented regularly for decades at conferences for mental health professionals.

Rebecca A. Wagner, PhD, is the director of eating disorder services and codeveloper of the Eating Disorder Track at The Menninger Clinic.
