Excellent Guide to Positional Chess

Analyze Your Chess is an excellent book for the non-master player (it would probably also be helpful to low masters).
First of all, the book is enjoyable. Crouch discusses his games, with an emphasis on games he should have won or should have drawn, but lost or drew. Crouch's style is positional, which is fine, but his repertoire is limited, and this book features many Scandinavian Defenses, an opening I neither play nor face (since I open with 1. d4) but I still found the games instructive. They are thoroughly annotated without the analysis being overly complex, and there are many instructive middlegames and endgames. Honestly, I am not sure if this book will improve my chess, but I found it an enjoyable read, written very candidly. I like this book!

Quirky but good

I like Crouch's books primarily because of the *very* thorough annotations with emphasis on prose explanations. I find that at times the writing seems a bit odd, perhaps partly because Crouch is Brithish and I'm American, but mainly because the books could at times use more careful editing. I could be mistaken but don't recall having this impression of Crouch's "Chess Secrets: Great Attackers", perhaps because that book (or series) was better edited.

Overall I like his books well enough that when they are on a chess subject of interest to me, I lean towards buying because he is the author. The books, including this one, are well-suited for browsing without a board because of plentiful diagrams and the prose descriptions. In "Analyse your chess", Crouch explains his thinking in great detail in his own games -- I find it fascinating as a very personal look at an IM level player's thinking and consideration of his weaknesses, focusing on errors which hinder his progress (and comeback recovering from a stroke and near blindness).

I was disappointed in the lack of a chronological list of games, although there is an index of games by opponent. The introduction and final chapter discussed this aspect of the book and the results extensivelyand I found the statistical approach of these two sections to be boring but others may not.

All three books mentioned have the "Look Inside" feature at Amazon.com. Reader reviews of Modern Chess shed more light on the editing issues I mentioned (one was titled, "Brilliant, but with editing difficulties"). The day I bought Modern Chess I was shopping with my wife and looked forward to stealing a few minutes to examine it while she tried on clothes. I was at first so concerned with a couple of examples that I feared I'd bought a lemon and looked up those Amazon reviews. Happily the book turned out to be a find and a personal favorite, and I will always consider books by Colin Crouch to be of potential interest.

wonderful tool to build reasoning skills!

We teach our children at home and we actually sit up at night and do these "logic and algebraic reasoning puzzles" for fun before bedtime! I hope there will be many more versions of this book in the future. We could do these all day and while we have great fun with them, the children are reinforcing important academic concepts.

This level one Balance Benders book is perfect for students age ten and over. I wrote a review of the "beginning" book and the only difference with this book is that the "puzzles" are more advanced.

Customers should understand that these are not "puzzles" in the sense of mazes OR logic word puzzles. Basically, you have a scale on each page and you have things on the scale. Based on what is on the scale, you use deductive reasoning to determine facts about the items on the scales. It's a lot of fun.

There's BB workbook before this one. My eight-year-old boy needed guidance in that one. He's now relatively independent (even seeing answers before I do) and I need to limit his time on the book. Good introduction to logical thinking.

Exploit! Oh what an ugly term. But it does not mean anything unethical or in any way “wrong”. For example, the rules of baseball say that after four pitches outside the strike-zone where the batter does not swing, the batter is given a “walk” to first base. Well at the end of the last inning, one run up, one man on, and the world’s best hitter stepping up to the plate is the pitcher going to throw one fast and straight down the center of the strike zone? Heck no!! Instead, four pitches in a row will happen so far outside the strike zone that it’s an even match between the catcher and first baseman as to who is closer to it. That is EXPLOITATION, using the rules of the game to your advantage.

This technical report is not intended to teach you to “game the system”, instead, it is intended to help you not be beaten by either the system or those trying to “game” it.

This technical paper, electronically published, is expensive. However, it is not nearly as expensive as hiring NVG Associates to provide the same information on a consulting basis (about 10% of the cost actually). We want more traders that need this information to have reasonably prices access to it. At the same time, this is not a report that will be sold to thousands of people, perhaps a couple hundred, so that is why it is priced as it is.

Waste of money, poor editing, ridiculous promises

Any useful advice can be found in any book on blogging, as well as for free if you are willing to do a small amount of web searching.

I would have given the book a few more stars just for trying to be helpful, except for the apparent lack of editing (misspellings and incorrect grammar) and the outlandish expectations the author presents to the reader. We can all add and multiply, and should understand the basic idea that only a certain percentage of visitors to your site will purchase products. Stating how easy it is to have a person buy a $47 book or a $197 or $497 product is ridiculous. To quote the author: "If you have a course that sells for $497 then you only need to sell 11 of it to get to your goal!" Yes, there are websites able to charge these types of prices, but this level of success comes by having an incredible product or a proven track record.

Any other blogging book will give you the same rudimentary advice without the unrealistic promises.

This book was way too basic. It did not have enough info in it at all. It pretty much just says sell a $500 video course or a $50 ebook to this many people...

Definitely Not an Actual "Plan" to Monetization of A Blog

I felt this book was very poorly put together. I found grammar and punctuation errors on nearly every page, and most of the actual "book" was consumed by screenshots we've all most likely seen already, if any experience is had. I have a lot of experience with blogging, journalism and correspondence and I feel like this book missed the mark is every way. While the tips are alright, this is basically an unedited mess that will end up wasting your time, versus actually providing you any informative tips, tricks or skills that you can actually implement. I was definitely disappointed with this one...

Good for practicing engineers but not as a graduate student text

I need to write this as a review of Chapters 1 (Background Elements), 2 (Data Converter Specifications), and 9 (Testing of D/A and A/D converters); since I am more user than designer of Data Converters.
I think this is a good book for practicing engineers to learn about the present state-of-the-art and common “rules of thumb” which most engineers use, and which work most of the time. In my opinion, it is not good for a graduate-level textbook. The reason it a lack of rigor in certain areas, which will not give graduate students the background they will need as engineers decades from now.
For example, it tells the reader to “Learn that” “The spectrum of the quantization noise is white over the entire Nyquist bandwidth”. The justification for this is based on a vague, non-mathematical discussion about assuming the noise autocorrelation goes rapidly to zero. Whilst the spectrum quantization noise turns out to close to white for many cases, it has been shown in several papers that this is not exactly true in many cases, and can lead to an overestimation of oversampling gain. There are other places where an intuitive discussion of assumptions, mathematical rigor, leads to results that are often, but not always true. Truly excellent text books often both the rigorous and intuitive view.

Prof Maloberti writes very intuitively and supports his presentation with sufficient mathematical exposition.

The presentation explains architectural and also circuit fundamentals.

Ive done adc and dac design for some time now and offen at the beginning of each project i refer to this book.

This book has also helped Analog/mixed signal interview preparation for many folks.
