This edition is clearly designed for those who have studied Latin and is to be used in the classroom. Your points are fine, but miss the nature of the book. As a Latin teacher, I am very grateful that there is no translation because students don't translate carefully enough if there is a translation in front of them. The word "dimoto" is, in fact, in the vocabulary, but you have to know that it's the past participle of dimoveo, so you have to know some Latin. I suggest you get Hanson's Loeb edition which has the Latin and English side by side, which would work better for your purposes.

His vocabulary and notes offer even a high school Latin student the ability to read Apuleius in the original without hesitation or apprehension. Stephen Nimis offers an intelligent and readable introduction to Apuleius' world and to the literary tradition which underlies Apuleius' Metamorphoses. A great tool to introduce this fascinating work to students who otherwise would have little or no experience of Silver Latin.

One Of The Best Books I've Seen For This Category!

I didn't know what to think when I first laid my eyes on this, but I had a gut intuition that this book had something more to it. I decided to give in and to go along with reading this; which was a great decision.

It is not often that I come across a war-related piece that was as entertaining as this. Lieutenant Rafe Stoner is quite the character and everything a man could want to be in their lifetime.

I would get this if you are like me and can appreciate a good adventure story or if you just want a unique experience all-together.

I am very grateful to have finally found a great book on the topic, because there aren't many and make sure you are ready for one heck of a ride!

Another great read by Meyer

Another good one from Meyer, Spoiler alert for those who don't what to know what the book is actually about.

This one starts with Lt. Rafe Stoner and his SEAL team in Afghanistan. They are in an uparmored HUMVEE looking for ambush sites. They are ambushed but kill those doing the ambush.

Rafe and his SEAL team find a UN convoy that was ambushed. Among the dead is Madelaine who the love of Stoners life. Madelaine was supposed to be on a day off but was in the convoy because one of her co-workers called in sick. She's now dead and Rafe is in one world of hurt.

Madelaine was a woman he met after and Afghan beauty, Faria, dumped him for his best friend Greg Blum. Blum and Faria are now married.

Stoner resigned from the Navy and stayed in Afghanistan. He runs a business supplying parts for the Afghan farmers ancient tractors. This is a side business though. Rafe's real business is a a gunslinger hired to kill. He's damned good at it.

Blum is also in that same business though he only works for friends and settles local disputes. He and his wife converted from Muslim to Christian. This is somethingt that will get him killed if the local Immam finds out. Muslim, unlike the Christian religion, is very unforgiving.

Ahmed Durani is the son of an Afghan Farmer and he discovers a cave full of ancient artifacts. He takes one to his friend Fiesal. Fiesal is a man his Father has warned him against time and time again but Ahmed sees the man as a friend so he shows him the artifact.

Fiesal likes what he sees and he knows its worth money. Money is all Fiesal cares about and he will sacrifice anything to get it.

So begins another fine read by Meyer.

This one has Rafe, Greg, Faria, Ahmed, Fiesal, a German Shepherd named Archer, a cave full of artifacts, Sheikh Daud, a Faria taken prisoner, death, destructioin, a Greg and Rafe coming to gether to save Faria, an old tractor that saves the day, an artifact thats more than it seems and Blum and Stoner coming together to save their world.

When I decided to read this, I expected a testosterone laden, weapons heavy, nonstop action book about spies, special forces types, with lots of gunshots, car chases and various forms of daring do. They were all in this book, too, but I got blindsided because what I *got* was a very good, and very disturbing book.

This is the story of a country: a land that has been devastated from without and brutalized from within in ways that anyone who has never lived there can barely comprehend. There are no societal rules, because there is no society, not as we know it. Everything is for sale, and human life is the cheapest commodity of all.

This is the story of people: Many of the people we meet are what should be the dregs of society, instead, because they have money, influence and very big guns, they rule. We also, however, meet decent people, who have come to terms with having virtually only 2 choices; to become corrupt or to become dead.

This is the story of a man: It is, when it comes right down to it, the story of the saving of a man by some truly admirable people and one incredible former member of the Marine canine corps. It is a story of love, loss, bitterness, and, of a soul that fights through the darkness, and almost in spite of itself, finds life, love, friendship and humanity.

The writing pulls absolutely no punches. The author shows life as it is in this destroyed ancient land, and his descriptions are hard edged and vivid. This is a violent story about a violent place, and we are shown that violence in all its gory detail. Action scenes (3/4 of the book) are handled with style and attention to detail, yet read with the swiftness and force of a pounding heartbeat.

There is even humor in this book, which I won’t share, because I don’t want to spoil the surprise, but I never realized all the uses to which farm equipment can be put.

The author does an excellent job with this narration, and has the kind of voice that is excellent for this type of book. In addition, his phrasing, speech rate and character differentiation were more than appropriate, and he could handle accents and foreign words easily and naturally.

Sometimes, being blindsided by a book, and having my expectations flung into the wind can be a very good thing, as with this book. It reminded me how fragile our human societies can be, and how indomitable the human heart and spirit can be …and *that* is something, I think, of which we need to be reminded regularly.

I give both book and author 5 out of 5 stars.

This book has been wonderful to use in our ESL classroom

This book has been wonderful to use in our ESL classroom. It is definitely for high level classes, but is a wonderful way to combine theology and ESL. I teach at a Catholic seminary, so we are also able to use this book to discuss the theological differences between the authors' writing and our faith.

It's really a workbook

We unfortunately focused on the "textbook" aspect of the title for a library purchase, but it's largely a workbook. The majority of pages are quizzes, and writing and fill-in-the-blank exercises. Not really appropriate for library use. It pays to read between the lines on the description.

�As well as writing two other book in our In Detail Series, Sunbeam-Talbot & Alpine In Detail, Jaguar XK120 In Detail and Jaguar XK140/150 In Detail, Anders has previously written 15 books, mostly on MG and Austin-Healey cars, including the famous Original titles but also books on Mini-Cooper, Porsche, Volvo, the Le Mans 24-hour race, and a popular history of Jaguar, and he has contributed to several magazines. He was one of the authors of the centenary history of the British motor industry and is a member of the Society of Automotive Historians. He is a keen motorcyclist and lives in Birmingham England.

Simply excellent

As a BMW 2002 & Z4 owner, driver, and BMW fanatic in general, I was exposed to Austin Healeys at the Alpine 500 vintage California rally this year. Being that purchasing books is cheaper than taking the plunge into purchasing cars, I grabbed two books on Austin Healeys. Two books on restoration, by accident. I really needed a guide on these fine cars.

Fortunately for me, this book is an EXCELLENT historical reference. This is not a how to restore an Austin Healey, this is a what you need, by VIN, to take yours back to original.

The author painstakingly dug through Austin Healey records to catalogue the changes within the series and between the years. Truly a monumental task. If only BMW had kept such detailed records between individual cars.

In the BMW world there is Mobile Tradition. MT will send you the build date, original color, and dealership that originally sold your car if you send them a VIN. With this guide, you get so much more. You get what suspension goes with your VIN, what brakes, when the brakes became disc in the front, at what VIN this was changed, at what VIN this manufacturer took over making the starter, etc..

Truly, this book is a wealth of knowledge for a person new to Austin Healeys and for someone looking to restore one to an original configuration. As a novice, the wealth of information can be overloading. However, the color pictures (some of Concours winners!) do make the nitty gritty details all that more enjoyable.

I'm off to find myself an Austin Healey!

Good restoration guide.

Not quite enough images to remake an entire car to concours originality, but you can get pretty far.I have a BN4, and have used dash, engine compartment, and trunk images as a guide to restoration for my particular car. Other cars are as well documented. The images are very nice and the text is clear.

A fine member of a great series

This is an example of a series about vintage British cars, by well-known expert Anders Ditlev Klausager. I started many years ago with the one of T-series MG's, as the proud owner of a 1950 TD.

I learnt a lot and was able to improve the originality of my car. It is worth noting that the author points to non-original items and discusses controversial features and dates, so it is possible to use these books as a standard for restoration.

I presently own five of them and plan to collect more from the series.

But make no mistake--this book is not just another attempt to profit off of a scary topic. Mark Monmonier is a professor of geography at Syracuse University, and Cartographies of Danger is an in-depth look at the little-known science of hazard-mapping. As Professor Monmonier demonstrates, hazard-mapping is as much art as science; detailed seismic-hazard maps of California, for example, failed to indicate the potential for the disastrous Northridge earthquake of 1994. Yet despite its imperfection, hazard-mapping is a valuable exercise and one that will undoubtedly improve in the coming decades.

Cartographies of Danger doesn't restrict itself to natural hazards such as floods, earthquakes, or volcanoes; Professor Monmonier also covers crime, pollution, and radon using the same principles of hazard-mapping. Syracuse University geography professor Monmonier, who brought his subject from grade-school classrooms to libraries and living rooms with How to Lie with Maps (1994) and Drawing the Line (1994), takes on the perils and promises of hazard mapping. A relatively new, postwar phenomenon, highly dependent on the capacity of computers to store and manipulate vast collections of data and statistical models whose assumptions generate controversy, hazard maps are ubiquitous, Monmonier urges, because they "afford control, either real or imagined, over fate and nature." Monmonier devotes full chapters to 12 specific hazards--earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, tornadoes, floods, groundwater contamination, air pollution, radon and magnetic fields, nuclear plants, hazardous chemicals, crime, and disease--and the challenges of mapping them (and of interpreting their maps). A useful tool for evaluating environmental risk.

Monmonier, a professor of geography at Syracuse University, discusses the art and science of hazard-zone mapping, "a momentous adaptation of electronics and numerical analysis", in this clearly-written explanation of the possibilities and limitations of the new cartographic genre.
Assuming no special cartographic knowledge on the part of the reader, the author begins with the basics of scale in map-making, and proceeds to explore the ways in which tornadoes, earthquakes, environmental pollution hazards, crime, and other risks are analyzed and translated into usable graphical form.
Noting that "it is wise to question the map maker's motives", Monmonier also encourages the reader to view risk-maps with some healthy skepticism as "partly rhetorical,,,social constructions" which "can always be manipulated".

With numerous charts, graphs, and maps, Monmonier's work is highly recommended as a clear exposition of geographic hazards and a useful tool for evaluating one's own level of risk.

It is written so non-technical types, like me, can understand.
