"After recalling the essence of what partial least squares (PLS) is doing and how it relates to other widely used multivariate techniques such as PCA or MLR, Discovering Partial Least Squares with JMP provides a series of case-studies. As a French reader, I obviously jumped to the last case-study, which addresses the problem of "baking bread that people like." Similarly, another PLS model is built to relate expert sensory ratings with consumer ratings. Both resulting models are finally combined to provide a useful model involving a limited number of sensory ratings that explain Overall Liking. All of this is done with detailed explanations, numerous figures, and even JSL scripts that appear on the left panel of the data table so the user can reproduce each single step of the analysis.

About the Author
Ian Cox works in the JMP Division of SAS. Before joining SAS in 1999, he worked for Digital, Motorola, and BBN Software Solutions Ltd. and has been a consultant for many companies on data analysis, process control, and experimental design. A Six Sigma Black Belt, he was a Visiting Fellow at Cranfield University and is a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society in the United Kingdom. Cox holds a Ph.D. in theoretical physics. In addition to Discovering Partial Least Squares with JMP, Ian co-authored the book Visual Six Sigma: Making Data Analysis Lean.

Marie Gaudard is a consultant in the North Haven Group, a firm specializing in statistical training and consulting using JMP. She was a Professor of Statistics at the University of New Hampshire from 1977 until 2004. She has worked with a variety of clients both in manufacturing and transactional areas, providing consulting and training courses in the areas of Six Sigma, Design for Six Sigma, predictive modeling, and forecasting and demand planning. Gaudard holds a Ph.D. in statistics. In addition to Discovering Partial Least Squares with JMP, Marie co-authored the book Visual Six Sigma: Making Data Analysis Lean.

This is the way a JMP book should be written!

I'm a JMP Pro user with 2 years of experience; I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Not only is it an excellent, hands-on overview of PLS, it includes many JMP tips and tricks. Like many JMP users, I'm an enthusiast who enjoys learning more about JMP's capabilities. The authors have done a wonderful job describing how the PLS platform can be used to solve high-dimensional problems. Highly recommended!

This thorough collection of van Gogh's letters has been assembled with an artful eye and sensitivity to the artist's thinking. The result is an atypical take on Vincent van Gogh that avoids putting too much stress on his troubled mental state and too much straining by the editor to shape a narrative out of van Gogh's epistolary clues. Instead, we see the thoughtful and contemplative side of this creative genius, as well as his concern for the impact his art and life had on those people closest to him.

Van Gogh was 37 and on the edge of fame when, in 1890, he shot and killed himself. Unable to sell his brilliant canvases, he was utterly dependent upon his younger brother, Theo, to whom most of the letters collected here are written. Anguished by loss of faith after planning to be a priest, disappointed in several once-promising love affairs, he was also so tormented by poverty that one of his artistic breakthroughs occurred when, without proper colors, he brushed in "a garden, green by nature, but painted without actual green, nothing but Prussian blue and chrome yellow." Whether van Gogh's suicide was the inevitable culmination of depression, or due to epilepsy or to professional frustration (he is remembered, beyond his pictures, for razoring off part of his ear), his letters reveal that the end was long contemplated. In 1878, he had written to Theo, "It must be good to die in the knowledge that one has done some truthful work." By the time he put a hole in his chest, he knew he had done that. The letters, edited by de Leeuw, the director of the van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, echo the artist's passionate voice, and the connective narrative excerpts other letters that readers may regret not having in full. Integral to the letters are 49 pen-and-ink sketches that evidence van Gogh's development into a creative force. Although each letter possesses an inherent pathos because one knows what lies ahead, van Gogh's epistolary appeal goes beyond melodrama. Often inspired by books despite being a limner of peasant life and the land, he once wrote, "How beautiful Shakespeare is, who else is as mysterious as he is; his language and method are like a brush trembling with excitement and ecstasy."

This popular edition of selected Van Gogh letters is based on the expanded four-volume Dutch edition De Brieven van Vincent van Gogh (Van Gogh Museum and SDU, 1990). The translations read smoothly and are more elegant than those found in other editions. Covering an 18-year period, this selection of letters aims to capture the spirit of Van Gogh's life rather than offer up yet another chronicle of facts and opinions. Following the beginning section of early letters, sections are organized chronologically by the geographic locale where Van Gogh lived and worked. Editor De Leeuw provides thoughtful explanations that link many letters and introduce each section. Several reproductions of Van Gogh's drawings accompany appropriate letters. An Intimate Look

I bought this book several years ago in a college bookstore. How fortunate these students were to have been able to read and discuss this with others! I have had a long interest in Van Gogh and found this book to be fascinating, an almost voyeuristic look into his short life. I am glad to see that it is available * * and would hope that people now seeing the traveling Van Gogh portraiture exhibit might read it.
De Leeuw has compiled letters covering over 25 years of Van Gogh's life, letters that offer the reader an intimate look into the artist's thoughts and emotions. He writes about his friendships, his family, his attempts at love affairs, his religious beliefs and questions, and most importantly, about his art. These letters reveal him as anything but the anti-social person often portrayed in the past, with the ones about his relationship with his brother Theo being particularly touching.
Van Gogh was a prolific correspondent and an absolutely wonderful writer. His prose is remarkable--he could have been a writer as well as an artist. These letters shed light on the inner thoughts and the inspiration for his art and show him as a person of great passion and compassion.

The Spirit of a Great Artist

While Vincent van Gogh has always been one of my favorite artists, this compilation of his letters combined with a more in-depth study of his work has intensified my appreciation of him as both an artist and a person. I've always felt it was impossible to separate this particular artist from his work and reading his letters has led me to a better understanding of why this is. These letters beautifully capture his soul and spirit and reveal him as the caring, expressive and socially aware person that he was. The combination of strength of character and vulnerability expressed in these letters explain both the intensity and sensitivity of his work.

"the best way to love God is to love many things"

A very fine collection of the letters, with multiple sides of VVG revealed. To read a collection of letters by an artist whose work you know very well is to invite yourself to take a look at him as a person. As a person, I found that I liked him best in these letters when he was struggling with his religion, his art, and his purpose. I'm glad that Roskill didn't make a selection that focused solely on the more famous and theatrical depressions.
I don't agree that this work reveals Van Gogh as a writer. For me, they definitely confirmed his status as a painter. At his best in these letters, he's painting with words.
Which doesn't make it a less interesting read. I found this a good adjunct to taking a look at the work again, it added an extra dimension to experiencing him as a painter.
Well worth the time it takes.

Surprisingly Relaxing!

This is a really fun coloring book for children and adults alike. The wavy drawings made possible by the 'Udder' theme are mesmerizing and relaxing to fill in with a rainbow of colors. The resulting pictures are really wild and fun to look at.

Warning: you may be craving milkshakes by the end of this book!

One of my favorites is UDDERWISE with an owl between two udders with a border of udders and owls to color. The adrenaline rush left behind from getting my hands on a sixty-five Shelby morphed into an explosion of every emotion I'd ever felt. I lunged forward and grabbed her hand. She gasped as I dragged her around the back of the building. I pressed her up against the bricks and stared down at her.

Immature, Ridiculous, and Just Plain Bad

While I hate to be the bearer of bad news, I have to say that this book is just not even close to worth reading. I read "Freefall", and while I didn't love it, I thought the characters and writing were good enough to give "Clutch" a chance. Tess Oliver dealt with some pretty heavy topics in "Freefall", and I always respect an author who can add that kind of substance to a book while telling a good story.

That all fell totally apart with Clutch. If you thought Taylor was annoying in the first book, get ready to want to slap the stupid out of this girl. Yes, I know that she's 18, and I probably should have expected it, but I just could not handle her constant attitude, bitchiness, immaturity, and "OMG, my family is ruining my life!" monologue. She doesn't take any responsibility for her actions, insists that she's an adult and should be treated like one, while simultaneously thinking "well, they all think I'm a brat so I might as well act like one!"

In addition, the book feels rushed and lacks substance. It's full of teenage angst and lacks any redeeming qualities that make me want to actually read about these characters.

What a disappointment. Freefall was worth reading, this one, definitely not. Spoilers: Taylor was an immature bitch! I just did not get her relationship with Clutch. Other than being hot, I didn't understand what he saw in her- she didn't have a single good character trait in her! It doesn't make sense. Clutch was so kind and thoughtful. And Taylor was this selfish immature kid running around doing whatever she felt like. Who flys to Alaska on a whim, without proper clothing, and ends up crying in a crazy mans shed? And for Clutch to fly to her rescue? Ugh. Lame! She truly acted her age. I get that her parents were overbearing but she still didn't think things through. I almost want to say Clutch is too sweet to end up with a girl like that but maybe he's an idiot too. I'm happy this book was free and I didn't waste my money.

When high school student Taylor Flinn’s parents ship her off to a relative’s house out of state, Jimmy “Clutch” Mason is both crushed and relieved. That wild girl may have his heart, but she’s out of control, and he’s way too old for her flirtatious games. But when she comes back, more grown up than ever and just a few weeks shy of her eighteenth birthday, all bets are off. With a boyfriend in tow and parents who won’t let her anywhere near Clutch, he knows he should stay away. But what his mind tells him and where his heart leads him are two very different things.

The Verdict: Well…that was a waste of money. I really liked Clutch in Freefall, and I couldn’t wait to read his story, but that didn’t work out so well.

Clutch is easy to love, and I certainly liked getting to know his character a bit more. It’s clear he loves his brother, his friends, and his business, but he’d do damned near anything for the barely legal girl whose relentless flirting and wild way have been driving him crazy for years. Taylor’s feelings for Clutch are no less intense, but she’s matured a little and begun putting herself first instead of throwing herself at him constantly. But no amount of clearing her head can do away with how she feels when Clutch is around, and when her parents and older brother forbid her from seeing him, she risks their constant disapproval to go after what she wants.

Unfortunately, I had a little trouble connecting to the characters. Taylor’s a rather flighty high school senior, and while most of the time she was perfect in her wild-child role, there were some odd moments where her declarations of love for Clutch just seemed a little too mature. I certainly understood Clutch much better, and he stayed in perfect character throughout the book, but when he and Taylor finally made a go of things, it felt kind of disconnected. For so many years he’d avoided her for her own good, always showing a protective side, but that seemed to fade a bit when their real relationship started. Given the depth of their feelings for each other and both their headstrong ways, it felt like the drama should have been a bit more volatile. Instead, they both acted so tame with each other.

What ruined it for me, though, was the ending. Sure, it was a happily-ever-after, I suppose, with Clutch facing off with Taylor’s parents and making it clear that he loved her and would take care of her, but it was so abrupt. The moment was over so quickly after all that build-up that it was a huge disappointment. It felt a lot like the author was told that she had a certain number of words left before the book hit its limit, so she just threw out a quick scene to wrap it up and called it done. Clutch is certainly an entertaining read for most of the book, but the characters lacked the depth that Freefall had, and the oddly rushed ending leaves a lot to be desired. The story is now set up for the next book, but while I’m a little curious about the rest of the characters, I don’t think I’ll be continuing unless I find them in the freebies list.

Get the background and philosophy right before you study too hard

I've studied Spanish, German and Chinese in both school and immersion environments; in both classroom settings and one on one tutoring. I've also been an English teacher to ESL students in several countries. Some things I've learned: you have to make it a primarily goal, not a hobby. An hour or two a week is not enough, it should be daily. There are lots of ways to study, but you need to focus on what works best, on the learning the most used language content first. Traditional books and classroom settings are mostly outdated and you can drastically speed up learning time by "hacking" - or making use of technological shortcuts. Don't spend years studying a language and end up barely functional. Get this book, internalize the tips inside, commit to learning rapidly and using the language naturally. You won't regret it.

Compelling book by enthusiastic author

Benny Lewis is passionate about languages, and this book conveys that passion together with practical steps you can implement straightaway.

Benny's general approach makes sense (if you want to speak a language, focus on speaking the language, not, e.g., on grammar books). But it's not just a theory. His approach is grounded in his own experience - both in unsuccessful language learning at school using traditional methods and in successful language learning as an adult. While advocating a general approach, he's not doctrinaire, but instead acknowledges that different approaches and tactics could work for different people.

The whole book was compelling, including:
- dispelling all the reasons why you "can't" learn a language
- practical tips (e.g., word associations, modal verbs to help your conversation before you know all the verb forms, how to tell whether French words are likely to be masculine or feminine)
- different tactics to use at different stages of language learning and
- online and other types of resources.

By the end, I understood how I can progress in learning a foreign language (while also appreciating that there will be bumps along the road and that I'll need to change my tactics from time to time).

Highly recommended. The best book I have read on adult foreign language learning.
