Review Spoils of War by Rin Sparrow 4,5 stars reviewed by Shayla- Superior Read
I'll start off by saying that if you're reticent to read this book because you fear it might turn out to be just an imitation of Captive Prince, don't! It has nothing to do with it.
True, the first chapter reminded me a bit of Captive Prince - spoiled rich brat gets a slave – but that's where all similarities stop. Spoils of War is unique and original in its own way. I loved the world the author created and the characters, who were extremely lovable. The author is very skilled when it comes to love scenes and descriptions. I am impressed how prolific and versatile Rin Sparrow is (checked her website as soon as I was done reading J) and I'm sorry that she doesn't have a strong enough presence in communities of dedicated fans of published M/M authors. She certainly deserves a lot more attention.
When it comes to the characters, I was taken by them from the first chapter. I liked the fact that Ara wasn't a complete brat and rapidly showed all of his good sides. I loved that Cajha wasn't perfect from the start and he kept on not being perfect and that's what made him my favorite character because he was so real. Moreover, his feelings for Ara made him a superb character. I was at times rolling my eyes because of the endearments, but the author didn't abuse them enough to make the story annoyingly sweet. What I was a bit aggravated about was the obvious age gap between Cajha and Ara (a few decades, although the author doesn't mention the exact number, but it's quite clear it's huge). Cajha doesn't come off as a pervert though, don't worry. As a result, it took me a while to get used to the idea and move on.
I would have loved to give Spoils of War full five stars, but, in terms of conflict it was a bit flat. When the characters got together there was nothing else standing in their way. Most fans demand perfect endings, but like a very skilled authors that I recently interviewed pointed out, real life isn’t all perfect. You can't have all the bad people punished and all the good people content. Or, at least, I add, if you have that kind of ending, you at least have to make the characters struggle a lot more to get to it. In this regard, Spoils of War lacked a lot of those struggles that make the plot move forward at a more active pace. There wasn't either external, nor internal conflict strong enough after the book reached a certain point.
However, it is still a gorgeous book, more than worth reading, and as a fan of fluffy, cute, light-hearted stories, I can tell you you'll definitely love it if you're like me.

Extremely enjoyable

This book was fun to read. Young spoiled guy is taken to the war front by his General father. He chooses a captured soldier to be his slave, and things take a turn when the army is overrun and he is saved by his slave from being raped by his own soldiers. He gladly goes with his slave. There has been comment in reviews that this book includes underage sex, but someone 18 is NOT underage so I do not know where that idea came from.

First off, I'm a huge fan of yaoi. Always have been. Well-structured, romantic stories are what I go for. And this story has it in SPADES! Everything clicks in this adventure. A spoiled yet kind-hearted uke; a strong handsome semi. The chemistry between them is quite hot and the excellent writing really breathes life into their unions. The story is compelling and kept me enthralled throughout. I enjoyed the secondary characters as well, they really added dimension to this story. All in all, well worth the money and it's a story that I read over and over. It's that good!
