Texas and Texans, Could be better.

This book is may have good intention, but came up very short in my opinion. Here is a portion of a recent letter I wrote to the teacher of this class in Fort Worth, Texas.

I'm not a big fan of the current Glencoe Texas & Texans book used in your history class. So I thought I would forward some feedback... Maybe you feel the book is fantastic? I'm at peace with that...I'd enjoy your comments!
In my opinion, the book is choppy as heck at times... and information is often missing, or unclear.
From the information in Chapter 12, Brandon and I could not really figure out when Texas became a State (ouch) !!
On page 269, on the timeline shown, it clearly says, "1845, Texas became the 28th state in the United States of American". In the top left corner of page 289, it says, "On December 29, 1845, President Polk signed the resolution that made Texas a state".
Later on page 289, it says, "On February 19, 1846, at a ceremony in front of the Texas capitol............The Lone Star flag was lowered, and the Stars and Stripes was raised. Texas officially became the 28th state in the United States of America".
In your opinion, when did Texas become a state??

There is a paragraph on the Council House Fight on page 277. Can you tell me where in this paragraph or chapter it explains what the actual "Council House" is?? Is it a place to hold fights? A court building? I can't seem to find the information. The first sentence on this subject says, "The government also tried to deal with the Comanche presence". What "government" are they talking about?? Local? Mirabeau Lamar? U.S.? Who? The book says the Council House Fight was "the greatest blunder in the history of Texan-Native American relations". It probably was, but WHO was responsible? Odd only "1840" is mentioned, with no additional date.

Avoid this - not much substance

Very dumbed down in terms of content and the level of writing. Lots of revisionist history, in particular putting the Indians in a much better light than more balanced histories of Texas like Lone Star: A History Of Texas And The Texans
by T.R. Fehrenbach. Too many pictures and not enough substance.

Prepares a homeschooler with same info as at public school

This book is for my son who started home school last year. I checked this book out at our local library before purchasing.
I like this book because it has TAKS test preparation tips and strategies. I don't care about TAKS, but if circumstances change and we are forced to send our son back to public school, at least he will have the skills needed to be successful, according to the State of Texas. I also believe test taking skills are important to enter college.
I do not doubt this book has its own slight spin on the facts, but that is how textbooks are these days. I am reading along with him and we will be doing our own research online and at the library for some of the topics of Texas history.
This book seems to do a good job of summation. There are lots of photographs and good color illustrations on almost every page. Each chapter is broken into 3 sections. There is a mini review after each section and then a chapter review. Each review, mini and chapter, includes TAKS test skill building as well as vocabulary. Some of the activities and assignments are for a group, but we are able to modify most of the assignments. Reading and analyzing maps and graphs are included as well.
The review questions are not only multiple choice, but open ended questions. That helps my son to develop thinking skills and since there are no right or wrong answers necessarily, he is able to think outside the box. I will say the questions seem to be a bit more interesting than the questions in my day: "Imagine you are driving across Texas. Describe your trip using the following geographical terms." Not, "Define these words and use in a sentence." Ugh!
Why four stars, not five? I have not reviewed the entire book. I am sure that there will be aspects I don't like, but it seems to be a very good textbook overall.
