kind of a let down...

I wanted to read this for sometime and all that want was left wanting at the finish. Half the book is some other author giving their opinion like a guy who stands in front of the movie spoiling it for those first watching. I love Kant but he'd be better without this on his resume.

You Kant Go Wrong

If German philosophers gets you hot, then Kant is your man. His observations are the standard for the followers of sublimity and respect the earlier writing of Longinus. If this is your first Kant encounter you'll want to follow it up with his Critiques of Pure, Practical and Metaphysic Morals and Ethics. Kant can explain your inter most feeling and unlike his later Tutons doesn't blame mommy.

AN EARLY WORK ON AESTHETICS BY THE PREEMINENT GERMAN PHILOSOPHER

Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) was a German philosopher who is perhaps the founder of "modern" philosophy, with his focus on epistemology (theory of knowledge); he wrote many books, such as Critique of Pure Reason, Critique of Practical Reason, Critique of Judgement, Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics, Religion Within the Limits of Reason Alone, Lectures on Ethics, On History, etc.
Kant begins this 1764 book with the statement, “The various feelings of enjoyment or displeasure rest not so much upon the external things that arouse them as upon each person’s own disposition to be moved by these to pleasure or pain. This accounts for the joy of some people over things that cause aversion in others… or the lively antipathy one person feels toward something that is to another quite indifferent… I shall cast my gaze upon only a few places that seem particularly exceptional in this area… more with the eye of an observer than of a philosopher.” (Pg. 45)
He outlines, “Finer feeling… is chiefly of two kinds: the feeling of the SUBLIME and that of the BEAUTIFUL. The stirring of each is pleasant, but in different ways. The sight of a mountain whose snow-covered peak rises above the clouds… arouse enjoyment but with horror; on the other hand, the sight of flower-strewn meadows… occasion a pleasant sensation … that is joyous and smiling. In order that the former impression could occur to us in due strength, we must have feeling of the sublime, and in order to enjoy the latter well, a feeling of the beautiful. Tall oaks and lonely shadows in a sacred grove are sublime; flower beds, low hedges and trees trimmed in figures are beautiful. Night is sublime, day is beautiful… The sublime MOVES, the beautiful CHARMS.” (Pg. 46-47)
Later, he adds, “Tragedy is distinguished from comedy, according to my view, chiefly in that in the first the feeling for the sublime is stirred, and in the second, that for the beautiful.” (Pg. 52)
He suggests, “The fair sex has just as much understanding as the male, but it is a beautiful understanding, whereas ours should be a deep understanding, an expression that signifies identity with the sublime.” (Pg. 78) He continues by discussing “the difference of the impression that the form and features of the fair sex make on the masculine. This complete fascination is really overlaid upon the sex instinct. Nature pursues its great purpose, and all refinements that join together, though they may appear to stand as far from that as they will, are only trimmings and borrow their charm ultimately from that very source.” (Pg. 86) He adds, “In matrimonial life the united pair should… constitute a single moral person, which is animated and governed by the understanding of the man and the taste of the wife.” (Pg. 95)
[He also, in Section Four, makes some quite racist comments about black Africans.]
Clearly, this is not one of Kant’s “major works”; and his racist remarks cast a deep pall over the book. Nevertheless, it has some value for those studying the development of Kant’s thought.
