A True "Criminal Minds" Story

This is frankly one of the most interesting books ever written. I am from South Carolina and grew up in the area where Gaskins committed his so called Coastal Kills. I've read many books written about serial killers and this is truly one of the most interesting. An alternate title for this book could be "How to Raise a Serial Killer from Cradle to Grave." This book is graphic and shocking and not for the weak of stomach. Gaskins spares no details in his descriptions of his many murders and tortures. He also spares no details about the childhood that he lived before becoming the monster he grew up to be. The most amazing twist (and believe me there are plenty twists) to the story of Gaskins is that he wasn't executed by the State of South Carolina for any of the tortuous murders he claimed to have committed, he was executed by the State of South Carolina for killing an inmate who was already on death row. You will shake your head in disgust and you will shake your head in amazement as you read this book. The images left in my head after reading this book will stay with me forever. The messages left behind in this book should be debated for many years to come. As troubling as this story is, it will make you think hard about everything from crime and punishment in the United States, to the Death penalty , to the extreme gaps that exist between poverty and wealth in America. One thing is for sure, once you start to read this book, you won't be able to put it down.
Personally, I believe there are people in this world who are abosulutley unredeemable human beings. Gaskins is a perfect example of such a person. The big debate though that will forever be pondered is "Was it nature or nurture?" The world may never know, and there are many people who really don't care. Gaskins is gone forever, but if you believe his story, sadly there are many more people like him walking amonst us. Read this book.

Disturbing book about a disturbing killer

Pee Wee Gaskins is probably the most infamous serial killer in South Carolina history. This "as-told-to" book was published posthumously. I've talked to a number of people over the years who knew Pee Wee personally and/or worked on his cases in some capacity. He was not known for telling the truth, so despite the fact that he supposedly had nothing to lose by delaying publication until after his execution, most people I have talked to believe he greatly exaggerated the number of people he claims to have killed in this book. Having said that, if even half of what he claims is true, this is still one of the most disturbing true-crime books I have ever read. Parts of it left me chilled to the bone. It also helps answer the question of what causes a human mind to go so bad. After reading about his up-bringing, you realize that a deeply disturbed mind is often the result of a deeply disturbed childhood. This book should be read by anyone who is interested in delving into the psyche of a serial killer. However, I don't recommend reading it before going to sleep at night. Your dreams are going to be troubled for a while.

I would recommend this book if you are interested in serial killers ...

The price was too high in my opinion, but I bought it anyway. It's very graphic and anyone considering buying it needs to know that. I was expecting some messed up stuff, but some of it was just whoa. I'm a Psychologist and I found it fascinating. It really shows you his pathology and is a direct window into what a serial killer thinks. I would recommend this book if you are interested in serial killers and if you are into Psychology. I just want to reiterate that this book is very graphic.
